OU Softball To Open Season At Texas-Arlington/Isuzu Classic

NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma softball team kicks off the 2001 season at the Texas-Arlington/Isuzu Classic that runs Feb. 9-11. The three-day tournament will be played at the Mike Lewis and Cottonwood Parks in Arlington, Texas.

The Sooners, who won last year's tournament with a 7-0 mark, will try to match that performance and win a second-consecutive title. They will begin on Friday with three games, including the 9 a.m. opener versus Louisiana Tech. OU will take on Kentucky at 11:15 a.m. and Brigham Young at 3:45 p.m. All three games will be played on Field 1 at Mike Lewis Park.

The teams will then be seeded in a double-elimination bracket that runs Saturday and Sunday at Mike Lewis Park. If OU wins the bracket, they will receive a first-round bye and face the winner of the fourth-place finishers from Pools B and D. The second-place finisher will play at 11:15 on field 2, while the third-place finisher plays at at 9 a.m. on field 3. A fourth-place finish will mean a 9 a.m. game on field 2 and the fifth-place team plays at 11:15 on field 3.

Oklahoma, who returns all eight position players, plus its designated player and a pitcher, are ranked No. 2 behind UCLA in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Preseason Division I Top 25. The Sooners will return home next weekend when they host the OU adidas Classic on Feb. 16-18.

Driving directions to the playing fields

Mike Lewis Park: Is located on North Carrier Parkway between Hwy 360 and I-30. From Hwy 360 take the Carrier Parkway/Green Oaks exit and go east. Entrance to the park is on your left. From I-30 take the 19th Street exit and go north. Turn left on Carrier Parkway and the entrance to the park is on your right.

Cottonwood Park: Is located on S.W. 3rd Street between W. Jefferson Street and W. Marshall Drive. From I-30, take the 19th Street exit and go south. Turn left on Jefferson Street. Turn right on Carrier Parkway. Turn left on Dickey Road. Turn right on Dickey to S. W. 3rd. Ball field will be on your left.
