Softball's Braitsch Named Big 12 Player of the Week

NORMAN, Okla. - After serving as the offensive catalyst for the University of Oklahoma softball team, Kelli Braitsch was named the Big 12 Softball Player of the Week it was announced by the league office Tuesday. The shortstop helped lead OU to a 5-0 start and the co-championship in the Texas-Arlington/Isuzu Classic.

"Kelli was definitely ready to start the season," said OU softball coach Patty Gasso. "She stayed on fire throughout the tournament and hitting in leadoff spot, she led our team in just about every offensive category. Kelli was a player in a zone and I hope we can keep that alive."

Braitsch recorded a hit in each game and two or more in four of the five outings. The sophomore got on base safe in nine straight trips to the plate and hit .733 for the weekend, going 11-for-15 with two doubles, three home runs and 10 RBIs.

In the season opener against Louisiana Tech, Braitsch's only hit was a solo homerun and she went 2-for-2 versus Kentucky with another homer. The Broken Arrow, Okla., native picked up a double and stolen base with a 3-for-3 performance in the win over Brigham Young.

In the win over Tulsa, Braitsch accounted for six of the Sooners' 17 runs, going 3-for-4 with a career-high five RBIs, two runs and a three-run homer in the third inning. She recorded a single and daouble with two RBIs in the final game aganst Arkansas.

Baylor's Joni Miller was named the Pitcher of the Week after posting a 3-0 record, including two complete games and a save. Miller had a 1.33 ERA with 10 strikeouts and appeared in all five games.

The Sooners return to action this weekend when they host the OU/adidas Classic. The six-team tournament runs Feb. 16-18 at the OU Softball Complex and features Creighton, Texas-San Antonio, Texas Tech, Tulsa and Wichita State.
