NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma softball team upended Connors State College in two games on the final day of the OU Fall Festival on Sunday. The Sooners emerged victorious 10-0 and 12-0 in the only two games of the event on the day and finished the event with a perfect 5-0 record. The tournament concluded Oklahoma's fall season in which the Sooners produced a flawless 11-0 record.
"I was pretty pleased with the way we swung the bats. I thought we hit the ball pretty well," commented OU Head Coach Patty Gasso. "We're still making a few mistakes by missing signals and there are some communication things we need to work out, but those typically are the kinds of mistakes that tend to happen during the fall season."
"I was real excited with the way we closed the fall season out today. The heart and soul of this team really showed today," continued Gasso. "In the final inning of the second game, the attitude in the dugout was 'don't be the last out,' and then we scored seven runs in the seventh inning. Everybody stepped up and responded and that's one thing I know from past experience is the teams that respond like that are the ones that you can't stop. It was fun to see them do that today."
In the first game of the day, OU scored half of its runs in the first two innings with the help of the top half of the Sooner lineup. Oklahoma's first five batters produced the first five runs of the game and were led by senior leftfielder Christy Ring who went 2-for-3 at the plate and reached base and scored in each of her three at bats. Junior third baseman Leah Gulla (2-for-4) was another offensive star for OU as she drove in four runs and scored another.
Oklahoma posted their five other runs in the fourth inning. After freshman catcher Christina Enea (1-for-3) singled home ring to score the first run of the inning, the Sooners took advantage of two Connors State errors to score the remaining four runs of the game with two outs.
Senior Angela Wedlake (4-0) turned in a complete game performance and struck out 13 batters, including at least two batters an inning in all but three frames.
Ring and Gulla continued to pace the Sooner offense in the second game, too. Ring topped all batters with four hits and three runs scored, while Gulla (3-for-5) produced a game-best five RBIs. Three of Gulla's RBIs came courteousy of a three-run homer which capped a seven-run seventh inning for Oklahoma.
Senior Jennifer Stewart improved her fall record to 3-0 after working four innings and relinquishing only one hit before being relieved by freshman Kami Keiter and sophomore Adrianne Ratliff for the final three innings.
