National Championship Softball Team To Be Honored At Rice Game

NORMAN, Okla. - The 2000 Oklahoma softball team that won the first women's national championship at OU will be honored at the half of the Oklahoma-Rice football game on Saturday. The Sooners will receive their national championship rings after completing one of the best seasons in OU softball history.

The Sooners defeated UCLA, 3-1, in front of a Women's College World Series record 8,049 fans at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. They closed out the year with a 66-8 record and won eight-consecutive games in the NCAA Tournament on their way to the championship.

Four players earned All-America honors, including seniors Ashli Barrett and Lisa Carey, junior Jennifer Stewart and sophomore Erin Evans. Stewart was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the championship, while Carey and Kelli Braitsch were also named to the all-tournament team.

In the Big 12, Oklahoma won its third conference title in five years and boasted the league's player (Carey), newcomer (Andrea Davis) and coach of the year (Patty Gasso). Gasso and her assistants, Melyssa Panzer, Tim Walton and Jennifer Jaime, were also recognized as the 2000 Speedline/NFCA Division I National Coaching Staff of the Year as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

The University will also honor 2000 graduate Lana Moran. The right-handed pitcher was the Academic All-American of the Year for softball and a nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year. She also received a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship from the NCAA. Moran went 26-2 with a 1.28 ERA and 109 strikeouts.
