Kissack And Stringer Lead Sooners In Cross Country Opener

TULSA, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma cross country teams opened the 2000 season Friday evening at the Sixth Annual Hurricane Cross Country Festival at Mohawk Park. The Sooner women, led by sophomore Aisha Stringer, finished second with 55 points. The Sooner men finished third with 73 points, paced by Brandon Kissack's third-place finish. Stringer finished second overall with a time of 11:32 over the two-mile course. Kissack, a junior from Bartlesville, ran a 20:29 over a four-mile course.
The meet drew entries from six men's and six women's teams and was held despite 100-plus temperatures at the start of the race in Tulsa. The Tulsa men, led by Tim Surface, won their meet while Southwest Missouri State placed five runners in the top 10 to win the women's competition.
Sooner freshman Joey McNair, a true freshman from Bartlesville, finished ninth overall with a 20:55. OU also got points from freshman Darren Hutchins, junior Cecil Rose and sophomore Jason Brown. Hutchins ran a 21:23, Rose posted a 22:01 and Brown had a 22:09.
The Sooner women got a 10th-place finish from Mustang senior Corrie Hussar (11:59) and a 12th-place finish from Bartlesville senior Stephanie Webb (12:04). Others who placed for OU were Jenks sophomore Kelli O'Rourke who was 13th with a time of 12:09 and Dallas sophomore Alaina Dearman who was 18th with a time of 12:23.
The Sooners continue the 2000 season next weekend with a trip to the Rimrock Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. Action begins at 10 a.m.
