SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Volunteer assistant coach Kurt Hanna had the best finish of the athletes with ties to the University of Oklahoma in the U.S. Olympic Trials late Friday.
Hanna cleared 17-10.5 to finish 15th in the pole vault but did not advance to Sunday's final. The top 14 vaulters advanced. Hanna was one of four vaulters who cleared 17-10.5 but needed an 18-2.5.
Michael McNamara, a junior in the fall at OU, failed to clear the opening height and also was eliminated. McNamara, who hails from Tulsa, still had a successful year, qualifying for the NCAA Indoor, NCAA Outdoor and the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Shomari Wilson, who last competed for the Sooners last year, sustained a hamstring injury during his heat and finished 39th overall in the 100-meter dash prelims.
Several current and former Sooners will leave later this week to participate in the Jamaican Trials and L'eron George will head to Montreal to participate in the U.S.-Canada Dual. George, a sophomore-to-be from Dallas, finished fifth in the 100-meter dash at the U.S. Junior National in June. His time of 10.48 also beat the qualifying time for the World Junior Championships to be held in Santiago, Chile, Oct. 17-22. He also finished fifth in the 200-meter dash at the U.S. Junior National with a time of 21.33. George saw limited action for the Sooners in the outdoor season because of a hamstring injury. He earned Junior All-America honors for a third-place finish in the 200 at the 1999 Junior Nationals.
