Sooners Send Two to U.S. Junior Track Nationals

NORMAN, Okla. - LaKisha Robinson and L'eron George will represent the University of Oklahoma at USA Track and Field Junior National Championships this weekend. The meet will be held at Fouts Field in Denton, Texas, with the University of North Texas serving as the host.
This meet serves as the qualifier for three upcoming international meets. They include a two-meet dual in Canada in July, the North American, Central America and Caribbean Meet in Monterrey, Mexico, in August and the World Junior Championships to be held in Santiago, Chile, Oct. 17-22, 2000. The first two in each event will qualify for the trip to Montreal while the participants in the other two events will be selected by the USATF and its committees.
Robinson will compete in the 400-meter dash while George will run in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Robinson will run the prelims in the 400 at 6:35 p.m. Friday and the final is slated for 7:05 p.m. Saturday. George will run the prelims of the 100 at 7:20 p.m on Friday and the final will be at 8:50 p.m. that night. He will run the 200 on Saturday. The prelims are set for 6:15 p.m. with the final set for 8:15 p.m.
Robinson, who is coming off a successful freshman year at OU, earned All-America honors as a member of OU's 1600-meter relay earlier this month. The relay finished eighth at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after finishing fourth at the Big 12 Championship. Robinson ran the second leg of the relay. Her best time this season in the open 400 was 55.26 which she posted in the prelims at the Michael Johnson/SW Bell Classic on April 22. She won the 400 later in the day with a 55.31. She finished 11th at the Big 12 Championship in the 400 with a 55.68.
George saw limited running opportunities in the outdoor season because of a hamstring injury. His season bests in the 100 and 200 were posted at the Texas Invitational on May 6. His time of 10.47 was good for 16th place while his 21.32 in the 200 was good for eighth place. At the Big 12 Outdoor Championship, he finished 12th in the 100 with a time of 10.71 and was 16th in the 200 with a 22.02. George, a sophomore-to-be at OU from Dallas, finished third in the 200 at this meet last year with a time of 21.25 and competed at the Pan-American Junior Championship in the 200 and as a member of 400-meter relay team. He earned Junior All-America honors for his performance in this meet last year.
While Robinson and George are competing at the Junior Nationals, several Sooners are at other meets attempting to meet qualifying marks for the U.S. Olympic Trials. LaBoris Bean (400 hurdles), Bambi Carson (discus) and Michael Westlund (pole vault) are in a meet in Houston this weekend attempting to qualify. Michael McNamara, who has already qualified for the U.S. Trials in the pole vault, is also competing in Houston this weekend. The U.S. Olympic Trials are scheduled for July 14-23,
