NORMAN, Okla. -- - University of Oklahoma Head Softball Coach Patty Gasso was selected as the The Dallas Morning News and Dallas All Sports Association Big 12 Female Coach of the Year after leading the Sooners to a 66-8 record and the 2000 National Championship. Gasso will be presented the award at a banquet on Monday, June 19 in Dallas.
Gasso has amassed a 303-101 record (.750) in six seasons as the Sooners' mentor. She has won three Big 12 regular season titles and was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year in each of those title seasons (1996, 1999 and 2000). In 1999, Gasso and her assistant coaches Melyssa Panzer and Tim Walton were selcted as the Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year. She has coached six All-Americans, including four in 2000 (Lisa Carey, Ashli Barrett, Jennifer Stewart and Erin Evans) and has never had a team finish lower than second in conference play in 11 years as a head coach. Entering the 2000 season, Gasso was listed at No. 9 on the active Division I coaches list for highest winning percentage.
The Dallas All-Sports Association is a nonprofit organization founded in 1965 by Field Scovell, one of Dallas' great visionaries who recognized the importance of building future leaders through the invaluable experience of athletic endeavors thorughout a person's life.
The Sooner softball team won the school's 20th national championship and became the first women's athletic team at OU to win a national title in 2000.
