OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma softball team used a dramatic two-run seventh inning to pull out a 2-1 win over California in the opening round of the Women's College World Series at Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla. Christy Ring's two-out bases loaded single to center field was the game winner and helped advance the Sooners to Friday competition in the winners' bracket.
Third-seeded OU struggled offensively through the first six innings in front of a World Series single-session record crowd of 6,856 (the old record was 5,017). California pitcher Jocelyn Foster surrendered just four hits through the first six innings but ran into control problems in the seventh. After OU's Andrea Davis walked to lead off the frame, Ashli Barrett advanced pinch runner Jaime White to second with a sacrifice bunt. Then Mandy Fulton and pinch hitter Jennifer Stump were both hit by Foster pitches to load the bases with one out. Freshman Leah Gullah ripped a single to left field to drive in White and knot the game at one. LaKisha Washington ran the count to 3-1 before eventually striking out for the second out, bringing Ring to the plate. Cal centerfielder Amber Phillips appeared to make a diving catch on Ring's liner, but the ball popped out of her glove as she hit the ground. Fulton came home to score the winning run.
The sixth-seeded Bears scored their lone run in the top of the fifth inning when Candace Harper drove in Phillips from second base with a two-out single off OU starter Lana Moran.
Moran gave up five hits and two walks in 5.0 innings before yielding to teammate Jennifer Stewart. Stewart, who surrendered just one hit over the final two innings, earned her 31st win of the year against just six losses. Forest took the loss to fall to 23-14 on the season.
The Sooners' win was the 300th at Oklahoma for head coach Patty Gasso. The three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year is in just her sixth season at OU.
Oklahoma, now 63-18, will face the winner of tonight's Arizona/Southern Mississippi contest. Friday's matchup will start at 8:30 p.m. California, which dropped to 49-24, will play the loser of tonight's Arizona/Southern Mississippi game Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
