NORMAN, Okla. -- - University of Oklahoma junior Lisa Carey was named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced today. Carey hit .455 in Oklahoma's four wins last week and recorded an amazing 1.182 slugging percentage. With a weekend sweep of Kansas, OU claimed its second consecutive Big 12 regular season title and its third in five seasons.
The Topeka, Kan., native totaled eight RBIs for the week, seven of those coming in the Sooners' 11-3 victory over the Jayhawks on Saturday. Carey hit two home runs (a three-run shot and a grand slam) which tied the school record for homers and RBIs in a single game. In OU's 6-2 triumph on Sunday, she hit an RBI triple and later socred to give the Sooners the lead for good. Carey's .483 batting average in conference games is the second-best among league leaders. The 1999 third-team All-America selection owns OU's career record for runs scored with 118. (The old mark was 103.)
Baylor freshman Joni Miller, a native of Edmond, Okla., earned pitcher of the week honors for her 3-1 record and 1.01 ERA last week.
An OU player has been named the Big 12 Conference pitcher or player of the week a total of six times this season, more than any other team in the league. Sophomore Jennifer Stewart earned pitcher of the week honors twice. Juniors Mandy Fulton and Ashli Barrett were selected in back-to-back weeks in late February. Redshirt freshman Erin Evans was named player of the week on April 11.
Oklahoma returns to action in the Big 12 Softball Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, May 10, and runs through Saturday, May 13. OU will be the tournament's No. 1 seed and play its first game Thursday at 10 a.m. versus either Kansas or Missouri. The tournament is held annually at Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
