COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior Stephanie Webb dropped her season-best time by 17 seconds in the 3,000-meter run and set a career best in the process as one of the University of Oklahoma's first competitors in the Big 12 Outdoor Track Championships.
The first day of action was held Friday here at the Audrey J. Walton Track-Soccer Stadium. Only five Sooners competed on the first day of action, three in distance finals, one in a field event final and one in the first day of decathlon action.
Senior Katie Webster returned to competition after nearly eight weeks on the injury list. She finished 12th in the hammer throw with a throw of 142-8.
Webb finished 14th in the 3,000-meter run with her time of 10:34.25. Mindy Mizell finished 15th with a time of 10:53.09. Sarah Harvey ran a season best 38:09.21 to finish 17th in the 10,000-meter run.
Freshman Shane Benton is in 16th place after the first five events in the decathlon. He posted a career best in the 400-meter dash with a 54.60. His best overall finish was fifth in the high jump.
Nebraska has the lead in the team standings in both the men's and women's competition. After two events, the Husker men have a four-point lead over Texas A&M, 19-15. After three events, the Nebraska women have a two-point lead over Colorado.
Action resumes Saturday and will conclude on Sunday with the majority of the final events scheduled for Sunday. OU will have competitors in 18 events including five finals.
