Sooner Softballers Named to All-Midwest Region Team

NORMAN, Okla. - The postseason honors continue to pile up for the OU softball team as six players were selected to All-Midwest Region teams today. Juniors Lisa Carey and Ashli Barrett, sophomores Christy Ring and Jennifer Stewart and freshman Erin Evans were named first-team All-Midwest Region. Senior Lana Moran was a second-team selection.

Each of the 31 schools in the Midwest Region were allowed to nominate a maximum of six players for regional honors. Players selected to either the first or second team are eligible for All-America status, which will be voted on prior to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., May 25-29.

All six Sooner players were first-team All-Big 12 honorees as well. Carey, a first baseman from Topeka, Kan., was named the Big 12 Player of the Year. She is currently hitting .415 with a Big 12-high 17 home runs. Carey was a first-team All-Region selection and a third-team All-American in 1999.

Stewart earned one of the two pitcher spots on the first team for the second consecutive year. The lefty owns a 28-6 record and 1.37 ERA heading into regionals.

Ring, an outfielder, is also a two-time selection (she was on the second team in 1999). The Westminster, Calif., native is hitting .356 and has stolen 27 bases this season.

Barrett picked up her third All-Midwest Region honor. She was named to the first team in 1998 and the second team in 1999. The junior catcher owns a .359 batting average with 16 home runs and a team-high 19 doubles.

Evans, a redshirt freshman from Lawton, Okla., is hitting .378. The Sooner centerfielder owns a 1.000 fielding percentage and has stolen 22 bases on the season.

Moran, OU's lone senior, is a two-time second-team selection at pitcher. She was also a third-team All-American in 1998. The San Bernardino,Calif., product has a 24-2 record on the season with a Big 12 Conference best 1.28 ERA. Moran was also selected to the GTE Academic District VI team in 2000.

The top-seeded and fourth-ranked Sooners open NCAA regional play tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the OU Softball Complex against sixth-seeded Harvard. Games begin at 2:30 p.m. when No. 2 seed Oregon State plays No. 5 seed Northwestern. Third-seeded Arkansas takes on fourth-seeded Cal State Northridge at 5 p.m.
