NORMAN, Okla. - - The University of Oklahoma softball team cleaned up as postseason conference honors were awarded at the Big 12 Tournament banquet today in Oklahoma City. Six OU players were selected to the first-team, including Big 12 Player of the Year Lisa Carey. Junior Andrea Davis was named the Newcomer of the Year and Head Coach Patty Gasso earned Coach of the Year honors for the second year in a row and the third time in the conference's five-year softball history.

Pitchers Lana Moran and Jennifer Stewart, outfielders Christy Ring and Erin Evans, and catcher Ashli Barrett were also all first-team honorees.

Carey, the Sooners' first baseman, finished the regular season with a .408 batting average, 13 home runs and 13 doubles. The Topeka, Kan., native led the league in runs batted in (61), total bases (133), on-base percentage (.488) and slugging percentage (.743). In just her third year at OU, she has already broken the school record for runs scored (108) and has also tied the season record for RBIs. Carey earned third-team All-America honors from the shortstop position in 1999, but rotator cuff surgery this past fall forced her to first base for the Sooners.

Davis, who is originally from West Jordan, Utah, came to OU after two All-American seasons at Ricks College (Idaho). The junior rightfielder hit .351 in the regular season with 10 home runs and a .672 slugging percentage.

Gasso led the Sooners to their third Big 12 Conference regular season title in 2000. She owns a 292-99 record in five-plus seasons at OU. Coming into the season, her 399-152 record in 11 seasons as a head coach ranked ninth among active Division I coaches.

Moran has racked up a 22-1 record with a 1.40 ERA in 2000 on the way to her first first-team All-Big 12 honor. The senior was a second-team selection in both 1997 and 1998. Her 63 career victories ranks third in OU history.

Stewart is a first-team selection for the second consecutive year after being named Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 1999. The sophomore lefty is 27-5 overall and a perfect 9-0 in conference games with a Big 12-best 1.24 ERA.

Ring, the Sooners' leftfiedler, sports a .370 batting average and a conference-best 27 stolen bases in earning first-team Big 12 honors for the first time. The sophomore was a second-team selection in 1999.

Evans, a freshman centerfielder, owns the fourth-best batting average in the conference at .399. The Lawton, Okla., native swiped 22 bases during the regular season and has a 1.000 fielding percentage. -more-

Barrett, a junior, is a three-time first-team pick. The Sooner catcher is hitting .355 with 18 doubles and a team and league-high 16 home runs. She broke the schoool record for career home runs earlier this season and now has 31. Her 175 career hits ranks fourth on the OU charts.

The Sooners picked up academic honors as well. Moran, Evans and sophomore Macey Wilson were named to the first team. Carey and junior Jaime White earned second-team honors.

OU opens play in the conference tournament Thursday at 10 a.m. against the winner of a play-in game between Missouri and Kansas. The tournament, which runs through Saturday, is held annually at Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium.
