OU Softball Sweeps Texas

AUSTIN, Texas - The Oklahoma softball team used four home runs to notch a 9-5 victory over the Texas Longhorns in Big 12 action today at McCombs Field in Austin. The Sooners, who are on a nine-game winning streak, moved to 43-5 on the season and 7-0 in the conference. Texas fell to 20-21-1 overall and 5-3 in the Big 12.

In the first inning, Junior Andrea Davis nailed a homer off the scoreboard in center field. First baseman Lisa Carey, who reached on a base on balls, scored on the shot to give OU a 2-0 lead after half an inning.

In the second inning, the Sooners added two more runs. Designated player Mandy Fulton drew a walk and then advanced on a single to left-center by centerfielder Erin Evans. Sophomore Christy Ring walked before shortstop Kelli Braitsch lined a hard single up the middle, bringing in Fulton and Evans.

Freshman Leah Gulla blasted her third home run of the season in the top of the fourth, a two run-shot to right field. Four batters later, Davis stepped to the plate, again with two outs, and smacked a home run off the scoreboard in center field. The shot scored three runs and put OU up 9-0.

The bottom of the fourth inning brought a Longhorn surge. Catcher Melissa Martin doubled to left field to lead off. With two outs, OU pitcher Jennifer Stewart hit pinch hitter Cathie Johnson. Freshman Lindsay Gardner singled knocking in pinch runner Chelsea Stoughton and Johnson to give Texas its first runs of the game. Gardner came home on a single to right field by rightfielder Audrey Hendricks to make the score 9-3 after four.

Texas picked up another run in the fifth on a solo homer by designated player Kat Richter. In the sixth inning, left fielder Tiffiny Valdehueza scored on a single by third baseman Keely Franks, leaving the score at 9-5.

Evans was 3-for-3 at the plate for OU and scored two runs.

Sophomore hurler Stewart picked up the win in four innings of work for Oklahoma. She struck out three batters and improved to 20-5 on the season. Senior Lana Moran pitched the final three innings for the Sooners. Texas used three pitchers in an effort to stop the Sooners. Senior Carmen Martinez took the loss, dropping to 6-9 on the year.

The Sooners return to action on Wednesday when they play a doubleheader at Missouri. Games are set for 3 and 5 p.m.
