NORMAN, Okla. - The fifth-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team capped its championship run through the Big 12 Conference regular season with a 6-2 victory over Kansas today at the OU Softball Complex. The Sooners have won the conference regular season crown three of the five years the league has existed (1996, 1999 and 2000). OU finishesd its regular season at 55-6 overall and 17-1 in the Big 12.

The Jayhawks opened the scoring as first baseman Shannon Stanwix homered to right field in the top of the second inning. KU's 1-0 lead marked the first time the Sooners had trailed in a game since dropping a 1-0 decision to Nebraska in 11 innings on April 14.

OU answered in the bottom of the third, rallying with two outs. Centerfielder Erin Evans singled to second base and then came home on a triple by junior first baseman Lisa Carey, knotting the score at 1-1. Rightfielder Andrea Davis smacked a single up the middle, knocking in Carey for the go ahead run.

In the bottom of the fourth, junior designated player Mandy Fulton singled to second base and freshman shortstop Kelli Bratisch doubled to start the inning. Freshman third baseman Leah Gulla hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Fulton for a 3-1 OU lead.

The Sooners tallied three more runs in fifth on a three-run homer by Davis, her 10th long ball of the season. Evans and Carey scored on the shot to left center.

KU added a run in the top of the seventh on another home run by Stanwix, before OU closed out the game.

Senior Lana Moran (22-1) was the winning pitcher in her last home regular season game. Moran struck out four and walked none on the way to her 22nd win of the year. KU's Melanie DeWinter took the loss, dropping to 8-16 on the year. KU is 30-29 overall and 5-11 conference games.
