Softball Blows Past Baylor, 8-1

WACO, Texas -- The Oklahoma softball team completed a weekend sweep of Baylor with an 8-1 victory today at Getterman Stadium. OU moves to 50-6 overall and 14-1 in the Big 12. Baylor dropped to 22-27 on the year and 2-9 in the conference. Oklahoma opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first. Left fielder Christy Ring doubled to left field with a full count and first baseman Lisa Carey singled to the shortstop. Catcher Ashli Barrett smacked a two-run double to center to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, OU got back-to-back homers from designated player Mandy Fulton and shortstop Kelli Braitsch. Both long balls were solo shots, Braitsch's crossing just inside the left field foul pole.

Ring and centerfielder Erin Evans both hit singles and Carey walked to reach base to the start the fifth. Rightfielder Andrea Davis lined out to the shortstop, Evans was caught off the bag at second and Ring scored from third on the double play.

The Sooners totaled three runs on two more homers in the seventh. Carey drilled her 11th of the season to start the inning. Braitsch nailed her second long ball of the game and seventh of the season, scoring Fulton for the 8-1 win. Baylor scored its only run of the game in bottom of the second on a solo homer by catcher Ryan Stukel.

Senior Lana Moran struck out three and walked none on the way to her 20th win of the 2000 campaign. Freshman Joni Miller fell to 10-10 for the Bears.

OU returns to action on Tuesday as they host NAIA powerhouse Oklahoma City. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the OU Softball Complex.
