Sooners Head South For Michael Johnson/SW Bell Open

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma track and field teams will head south today to compete in Michael Johnson/Soutwestern Bell Open.

The meet will begin with the pole at 3:30 p.m. today and will continue through the mile relay on Saturday. Other events scheduled for Friday include the hammer, the women's 3,000-meter run and the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Action will resume on Saturday with the field events beginning at 9 a.m. and the running event prelims at noon. Running event finals will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday with the men's mile relay slated for 8:35 p.m.

THE FIELD - Teams joining Baylor and OU in competition include Dallas Baptist, Lamar, New Mexico State, Northwood, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas-San Antonio, Wichita State and the women's team from New Mexico.

LAST WEEK - It was a successful meet for the Sooners despite less than favorable weathr conditions. OU added two NCAA provisional qualifiers and won nine events. Sooner winners included Bambi Carson, who won the shot put with a throw of 49-3, Michael Blackwood, who won the 400 with a time of 45.78, a season best for him, Jimyria Hicks, who ran a season-best 23.97 in the 200-meter dash, Jennifer Fontenot, who took the 400, Alesha Peel who won the 100-meter high hurdles, Jonas Lusk who won the 110-meter high hurdles and tied his season best with a 14.18, LaBoris Bean who won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a season-best 51.59, Mike Westlund, who took the pole vault title with a season-best 17-4.50, and Kyle Bookout who won the discus with another season best of 172-0.

NCAA UPDATE - OU added two NCAA provisional qualifying marks at the John Jacobs bringing the total of Sooner athletes who have beaten provisional standards to eight. Michael Westlund equalled the provisional mark in the pole while the women's 400-meter relay (Janel Hayes, LaToyia Hinds, Jimyria Hicks, Staneshia Bell) beat the provisional mark with a 44.94. Michael Blackwood improved his mark to 45.78.

The first three Sooners to meet the NCAA provisional qualifying marks did it in the season-opening meet. Jennifer Fontenot, Michael Blackwood and Bambi Carson posted NCAA provisional qualifying marks at LSU. Fontentot, who qualified for the NCAA Indoor, won the 400-meter dash at LSU with a time of 53.45. Blackwood, another NCAA Indoor qualifier, finished second in the 400 and beat the mark. Carson, who beat the NCAA Indoor provisional mark for the indoor meet but was not added to the field, won the shot put at LSU with a 49-5.75.

AT THE KANSAS RELAYS - Earlier this week, OU freshman Lindsay Cobbs built a 171-point lead in the first four events of the Kansas Relays heptathlon on Wednesday, then used solid performances in the long jump and 800-meter run today to win the title, the first of her collegiate careeer. Cobbs had finished seventh in the heptathlon bronze at the College Station Multis in mid March.

Cobbs finished with 4,453 points, edging Ashley Pyle of Kansas. That total was a career best mark and she also recorded career bests in the 100-meter hurdles (14.94), the high jump (4-11.75), and the javelin (88-6).

NEXT UP - The Sooners will split up next weekend. Those who qualify will head to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake Relays on Friday and Saturday. The remainder of the team will stay in Norman to compete in next Saturday's Sooner Outdoor.
