Oklahoma Shuts Out Baylor, 6-0

WACO, Texas - The University of Oklahoma softball team rolled another conference win today over the Baylor Bears at Getterman Stadium, 6-0. The Sooners improved to 50-6 overall and 14-1 in the Big 12. Baylor dropped to 22-27 on the year and 2-9 in the conference.

Oklahoma got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning, scoring four runs on five hits. Junior rightfielder Andrea Davis nailed a shot over the fence in center field to lead off. Catcher Ashli Barrett doubled to left field, designated player Mandy Fulton walked and Erin Evans singled to load the bases. Freshman third baseman Leah Gulla singled to right, knocking in Barrett for the 2-0 lead. Second baseman LaKisha Washington reached on a fielder's choice as Fulton was tagged out at home plate. Gulla and Washington both advanced on the play on a throwing error by Baylor catcher Ryan Stukel. Leftfielder Christy Ring singled to left field scoring Gulla. Baylor brought in freshman Sarah Caudle to pitch for the starter Carrie Arn, and she retired the next two batters to end the inning.

The Sooners added two runs in the seventh. Junior first baseman Lisa Carey went deep in the sixth with her 10th home run of the season to give OU a 5-0 advantage. Barrett walked to reach base. Sophomore Larissa Foley entered the game to pinch run for Barrett and then came home on a double off the wall in centerfield by Fulton.

Sophomore Jennifer Stewart upped her season record to 25-5 with the victory. The 1999 Big 12 Freshman of the Year registered five strikeouts and did not walk a single batter, while allowing only four Baylor hits. Arn took the loss for the Bears, falling to 6-8 on the year. Caudle struck out four and walked three in 5 2/3 inning of work.

The weekend series between the Bears and the Sooners continues Saturday at noon.
