NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma softball team dropped a game, 1-0, in 11 innings before rallying to mercy-rule Nebraska, 13-0, in the second game Friday at the OU Softball Complex. The Sooners and Huskers remain tied for the Big 12 Conference lead with one loss a piece. The Sooners are 46-6 on the season and 9-1 in leauge play. Nebraska is 32-17 and 7-1 in the Big 12.
Oklahoma managed three hits and committed three errors in the opening game, wh. Nebraksa pitcher Leigh Ann Walker struck out 13 and walked nine batters in eight innings of work, but the Huskers didn't generate any offense of their own until the top of the 11th inning. Nebraksa began the inning with Alice Brewer on second base due to the international tie-breaker rule. The Huskers bunted and advanced Brewer to third. With one out, right fielder Kim Ogee squeeze bunted and score Brewer for the game's only run. The Sooners went three-up three down to end it.
Nebraska's Jenny Voss was credited with the win, while Sooner senior Lana Moran took her first loss of the season. Moran, now 17-1, struck out five batters as she pitched all 11 innings.
The Sooners struck back in second game, tallying 13 runs on 12 hits and 3 Husker errors. OU scored in every inning in the mercy-rule victory to even the score with the Huskers. Junior Lisa Carey and sophomore Christy Ring both went two-for-three at the plate, each scoring two runs. The team added three home runs to its ever-growing season total, which now sits as 56 . Juniors Ashli Barret nailed three-run shot in the second inning and in the next at bat Mandy Fulton smacked her sixth long ball of the season. Freshman Jennifer Stump drilled a shot over the fence in the fourth.
Sophomore hurler Jennifer Stewart improved her season record to 23-5 with the victory. The Yukon, Okla.-native struck out five and walked one in five innings in the circle. Voss took the loss in the game, dropping ot 11-7 on the year.
Oklahoma continues its five-game homestand Saturday when they host Texas Tech at 3 p.m. At 5:30 p.m. an OU alumni game will be played.
