WICHITA, Kan. -- - The University of Oklahoma softball team picked up two shut out victories, 10-0 and 11-0, over Wichita State today in Wichita, Kan. The team combibed to hit five home runs in doubleheader. The fifth-ranked Sooners, who host the OU/Worth Invitational this weekend, move to 25-2 on the season.
In the first game, OU scored 10 runs on eight hits to run-rule Wichita State. The Sooner offensive attack was highlighted by three home runs. In the second inning, catcher Ashli Barrett knocked her ninth long ball of the season to open the scoring. Junior outfielder Jaime White went 3-for-3 in the game and hit her second home run of the season. She also recorded five RBIs. To lead off the third, freshman Kelli Braitsch smacked her fourth homer of the year.
Freshman Kourtney Davis collected the win in just two innings on the mound bringing her season record to 5-0. Senior lefty Lana Moran finished the game for the Sooners. Wichita State's Tricia Grimsley dropped to 5-9 on the season.
The story was the same in the second contest, as OU scored in every inning to run-rule the Shockers again. Oklahoma scattered 12 hits to Wichita States's one for 11-0 run-rule in five innings. Junior Andrea Davis went 3-for-3 at the plate and hit her first homer of the season. Lisa Carey, a third-team All-American in 1999, also knocked her third home run of the year. The junior was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Sophomore hurler Jennifer Stewart was the winner on the mound in three innings for OU, improving her season record to 13-2. Kourtney Davis pitched the last two innings for Oklahoma. Courtney Crumbliss (1-2) picked up the loss for Wichita State.
The squad returns to action this weekend in the OU/Worth Invitational. The field includes No. 8 Louisiana State, Wichita State, Colorado State, Texas-San Antonio and No. 12 Southern Mississippi. The Sooners are looking to avenge two of their losses in the NCAA Regional a year ago to Louisiana State and Southern Mississippi. OU opens the tournament on Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Louisiana State. On Saturday, they face Texas-San Antonio at 4 p.m. and Colorado State at 6:30 p.m. Oklahoma will finish tournament play on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.against Souther Mississippi. The game with Southern Mississippi will be radio broadcast on KNOR 1400 and KOKC 1490.
