OU Softball Takes Two From Tulsa

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma softball squad picked up two wins today as they beat intra-state rival Tulsa, 4-1 and 1-0. The seventh-ranked Sooners improved their season record to 38-5, while Tulsa dropped to 10-21 on the year.

Oklahoma scored four runs on six hits in the opening game. In the bottom of the first, freshman shortstop Kelli Braitsch doubled and then came home on a single to left-center by first baseman Lisa Carey. Tulsa got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning as sophomore Danielle Olsen reached base and then advanced to third on an error by Sooner catcher Ashli Barrett. Olsen scored the Golden Hurricane's only run on a single by the catcher Ann Mesman.

The Sooners scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Barrett reached on error by Olsen to begin the inning. Rightfielder Andrea Davis doubled, scoring Barrett. Junior Mandy Fulton nailed a two-run homer over the left field fence to give OU a 4-1 lead for good. The lon gball was Fulton's fourth of the season.

Senior Lana Moran recorded the win for OU. The lefty tied her season high in strikeouts with six. She did not walk a batter and gave up only two hits in the complete game victory. Moran's record now stands at a perfect 14-0. Anglea Wedlake, who recorded nine strikeouts, took the loss for the Golden Hurricane. Her record fell to 6-5 on the season.

In the second contest, OU scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first. Lead off batter Christy Ring walked to reach base and then advanced to second and third on two wild pitches by Tulsa's Jenny Magill. Ring came in to score on a sacrifice fly to center field by Braitsch.

OU pitcher Jennifer Stewart allowed only two Tulsa hits and recorded eight strikeouts on her way to the win. Stewart's season record improved to 18-5. Magill struck out seven batters, but dropped to 2-11 on the year with the loss.

Oklahoma returns to action this weekend in Norman when they host Big 12 Conference foe Iowa State. Saturday's game is scheduled for 2 p.m. and Sunday's game begins at 12 noon.
