Sooners Top Aggies, 4-2

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Oklahoma began the Big 12 Conference softball season with a 4-2 victory over No. 25 Texas A&M. The sixth-ranked Sooners, who are looking for their second consecutive Big 12 Conference crown, improved their overall record to 35-5 on the season, and 1-0 in the Big 12. The Aggies dropped to 20-11 on the year and are 0-1 in conference play. The game was the first of a two game series between the two teams in College Station.

Texas A&M snagged the lead early in the contest scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Second baseman Lisa Klam and first baseman Angie Long both singled to reach base. Catcher Selena Collins knocked a single to left field, driving in Klam and Long and making the score 2-0 in favor of the Aggies.

The Sooners tallied their first run of the game in the third inning as leftfielChristy Ring doubled and then came home on a single by freshman shortstop Kelli Braitsch.

Junior designated player Andrea Davis blasted her fifth home run of the season over the right field fence to knot the score at 2-2 in fourth inning.

Oklahoma took the lead for good in the top of the fifth. Junior first baseman Lisa Carey came to plate with two outs and two runners on base. Carey doubled, bringing in Ring and rightfielder Jaime White. The OU defense did not allow another Aggie hit in the contest, sitting down three consecutive batters in the final three innings.

Sophomore pitcher Jennifer Stewart struck out four batters on her way to the win for OU. The lefty moved her season record to 17-5. Amy Vining fell to 13-7 for the Aggies.

Ring led the Sooners' offensively. The sophomore went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored two of OU's four runs in the game.

Oklahoma continues play Sunday at 1 p.m. against the Texas A&M at the Aggie Softball Complex.
