NORMAN, Okla. - While some of the multi-event athletes opened outdoor competition last weekend at Texas A&M, the complete outdoor track and field team will open its season on Saturday at the U.S. Track and Field Series in Baton Rouge, La. Joining OU and host Louisiana State in the meet are Texas Christian and Texas A&M.
NCAA INDOOR RECAP - The Sooner men finished tied for 19th with eight points in the NCAA Indoor Championsips held March 10-11 in Fayetteville, Ark. OU's 1600-meter relay, made up of Raoul Harvey, LaBoris Bean, Michael Jackson and Michael Blackwood, finished second. Blackwood also qualified for the meet in the 400 but did not advance to the finals. He finished 12th in the prelims with a time of 46.69. In the pole vault, Michael Westlund finished 12th after clearing 17-4.5 and Michael McNamara did not clear the opening height of 16-10.75. Jennifer Fontenot was the sole qualifier for the women and while she ran one of her better times in the 400, she did not advance to the finals. She finished 14th overall with a time of 53.90.
THE LSU MEET - Action will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer throw. The first event on the track will be the 3,000-meter steeplechase and it is scheduled for 12:15 p.m.. The final event, the men's 1600-meter relay, is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. That event should be an interesting one as the Sooner quartet who ran in the NCAA Indoor will be competing against the TCU squad which edged OU for the national indoor title. OU has entries in every event in the meet which will be held at Bernie Moore Track Stadium.
