OU Softball Defeats Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif-- - The University of Oklahoma softball team won both games of a doubleheader at Long Beach State Tuesday. OU took the first game 3-1 in eight innings and the second 5-2. The Sooners record is now 30-4 going into this weekend's Kia Klassic in Fullerton, Calif.

In the first game, the both teams were scoreless through five innings, before OU left fielder Christy Ring singled in the sixth and right fielder Kelli Braitsch doubled to give the Sooners their first run of the game. Long Beach State responded in the bottom of the inning, as Jessica Smith knocked in third baseman Christina Zepeda to tie the score.

In the eighth, it was all OU. Braitsch and Ring both singled and were knocked in by catcher Ashli Barrett to give Oklahoma a 3-1 lead. The Sooners retired three straight batters in the bottom of the inning to notch the win.

Sophomore Jennifer Stewart threw all eight innings for the win. Her record stands at 15-4 on the season.

In game number two, OU led 5-0 through six innings. In the bottom of the seventh, Long Beach State threatened, scoring two runs before the Sooners could end the game.

Senior Lana Moran pitched four innings for the win and moved her record to 9-0 on the year. Freshman Kourtney Davis threw the final three innings for OU.

Ring was a combined 7-for-8 on the day and scored six of the Sooners eight runs. The sophomore also stole two bases in both games to bring her season total to 19.

OU travels next to Fullerton, Calif., for the Kia Klassic. The Sooners open tournament play at 11 a.m. on Thursday against Oregon State.
