No. 5 Softball Wins Two At Worth Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma softball team defeated Texas-San Antonio, 5-3, and run-ruled Colorado State, 9-0, at the OU/Worth Invitational today. The Sooners bounced back from yesterday's loss to No. 8 Louisiana State and improved their record to 27-3 on the year.

The Sooners recorded five hits in the win over Texas-San Antonio. In the first inning, leadoff hitter Christy Ring reached first on four balls and then moved to second on her fourteenth stolen base of the season. Catcher Ashli Barrett singled, scoring Ring for the first run of the game. In the fifth, Barrett blasted her tenth home run of the year over the left field fence to give Oklahoma a 2-0 lead.

Texas-San Antonio got on the score board in bottom of the fifth as designated player Kristy Connor hit a solo homer to lead off the inning. Amanda Michalsky knocked in Lindsey Blake to knot the score at two runs a piece.

Oklahoma responded scoring two more runs in the sixth on hits by third baseman Mandy Fulton and second baseman LaKisha Washington. Jennifer Stump scored an insurance run after hitting a single to left-center in the seventh.

Michalsky hit a home run with one out and no runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but OU retired the next two batter to close out the win.

Sophomore hurler Jennifer Stewart notched the win for Oklahoma in three innings of work, improving to 14-3 on the year. Lana Moran pitched the first five innings for the Sooners.

In the second game, OU scored early and often in a run-rule victory over Colorado State. The Sooners scored nine runs on nine hits. Barrett again led the offensive hitting two doubles in two at bats. The catcher also knocked in two runs and scored two herself. Outfielder Jaime White also nailed two doubles and had one RBI. In bottom of the first, junior Andrea Davis blasted her second home run of the year.

Freshman pitcher Kourtney Davis improved her record to 6-0 on the season, allowing only three Colorado State hits in the game. vOklahoma returns to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. against No. 12 Southern Mississippi and at 5:30 p.m. against Wichita State. Tournament play begins at 10 a.m.
