NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma softball team lost to Southern Mississippi, 5-4, in ten innings and then came back to beat Wichita State, 5-2, in the final day at the Worth Invitational. The Sooners' season record now stands at 28-4 on the year.
In the first game with Southern Mississippi, the Sooners managed five hits in the 10-inning contest against All-American pitcher Courtney Blades. Blades struck out 14 batters in the complete game victory. Junior Lisa Carey was 2-for-4 with a single and her fourth home run of the year. Two of Carey's four homers have come off Blades this season. Catcher Ashli Barrett hit her ninth double of the year.
Sophomore hurler Jennifer Stewart took the loss for OU in all 10 innings on the mound. The Yukon, Okla.-product struck out eight batters increasing her season strikeout total to 95 on the year. Her record drops to 14-4 with the loss.
In the 5-2 victory over Wichita State, OU scattered 11 hits. First baseman Jennifer Stump went 2-for-3 at the plate and recorded three RBI. The freshman blasted her first home run of the year, a two run shot over the centerfield fence. Shortstop Leah Gulla also went 2-for-3, including an RBI double.
Lana Moran picked up win number eight on the season. The senior owns a 8-0 record.
Oklahoma returns to action on Tuesday in a doubleheader at Long Beach State, in Long Beach, Calif. The team will complete in the Kia Classic in Fullerton, Calif., March 16-19.
