Sooner Softball Wins Two In Arizona

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma softball team won its first two games of the Wildcat Softball Classic at Hillenbrand Stadium on the University of Arizona campus Friday. The eighth-ranked Sooners improved to 9-0 on the year by beating New Mexico, 10-2, and Penn State, 9-3.

In the bottom of the first inning against New Mexico, OU opened the scoring on RBI singles by freshman Jennifer Stump and junior Mandy Fulton. Stump came home after an error by the New Mexico leftfielder to give OU a 3-0 lead. After a hitless second inning, OU went ahead 8-1 in the third, scoring five runs on five hits and two New Mexico errors. Catcher Ashli Barrett nailed her fifth home run of the season and LaKisha Washington ended the game with an RBI single. Sophomore Jennifer Stewart (7-0), the reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, earned her seventh win and moved her strikeout total to 44 on the season.

Against Penn State, OU jumped to a five-run lead in the second inning on its way to a 9-3 win. Freshman Leah Gulla hit a two-run single to the start the scoring. Then, Lisa Carey doubled to score Jaime White and Gulla. Later in the fifth inning, Oklahoma batted through the order as Fulton's two-run double sparked a four-run inning for the Sooners. Senior Lana Moran started and picked up her first win in her first appearance this season.

The undefeated Sooners continue play Saturday at 9 a.m. as they take on Tennessee Tech. OU faces Kentucky at 7 p.m. Oklahoma beat Kentucky 5-0 last weekend at the Texas-Arlington Isuzu Motors Invitational. The Sooners will play No. 4 Arizona, the host school, on Sunday at 1 p.m.
