NORMAN, Okla. - - The University of Oklahoma softball team started slow but erupted in the sixth inning to claim a 9-0 victory over Southwest Texas Saturday at the Texas-Arlington Invitational. OU won three games on Friday in pool play and began bracket play with a victory.

Pitcher Jennifer Stewart improved her record to 3-0 on the year. The sophomore hurler struck out eight batters and allowed just two hits in five innings. Stewart claimed victories over Kentucky and Purdue on Friday.

OU struggled offensively early in the contest as the score remained deadlocked at 0-0 through five innings. The Sooner offense heated up in the top of the sixth, posting nine hits and scoring all nine of their runs. Three different Southwest Texas pitchers faced 13 Sooner batters.

Lisa Carey led-off the inning with a single and Ashli Barrett reached on an error before freshman Jennifer Stump struck out. Junior third baseman Mandy Fulton singled and drove in Carey and Barrett scoring Oklahoma's first two runs of the game. Freshman shortstop Leah Gulla knocked her second home run of the tournament during the hot streak. The shot scored Andrea Davis and Erin Evans and gave the Sooners a 5-0 lead. OU went on to score four more runs before Southwest Texas finally recorded a third out.

Sophomore Christy Ring had a solid game at the plate. The 1999 Second-team All-Big 12 selection was 3-for-4, hitting a double and driving in one run.

In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Kourtney Davis, who picked up her first collegiate win against Louisiana-Monroe Friday, went to the mound for OU. She struck out two of the four batters she faced and closed the game in the sixth inning due to a run-rule.

Oklahoma returns to action at 9 a.m. on Sunday against Texas-San Antonio. Two more wins would put the team in the tournament championship game scheduled for 2 p.m. that afternoon.
