ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Oklahoma softball team began its season with three impressive wins today at the Texas-Arlington Isuzu Invitational. The No. 8 Sooners defeated Kentucky, 5-0, Louisiana-Monroe, 2-0, and Purdue, 6-1, to win their pool. They move into bracket play on Saturday and Sunday.
Sophomore pitcher Jennifer Stewart started right where she left off last year, picking up wins against Kentucky and Purdue. The 1999 Big 12 Freshman of the Year recorded 15 strikeouts in 13 innings of work. Freshman Kourtney Davis won her collegiate pitching debut over Louisiana-Monroe.
Lisa Carey provided solid offensive production for the Sooners. The junior went 4-for-8 in three games and recorded a home run against Purdue. Freshmen Jennifer Stump and Leah Gulla also hit home runs against the Boilermakers. Junior catcher Ashli Barrett homered in the Kentucky game. She was second on the team in home runs last season with seven.
With the win over Kentucky, Head Coach Patty Gasso won her 400th career game and moved her overall record to 240-93 (.720) at OU. Gasso is beginning her sixth season as the Sooners' head coach.
Oklahoma returns to action at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Its opponent is yet to be determined.
