San Antonio, Texas -- The University of Oklahoma women's softball team had three senior players taken in the 2001 Women's Pro Softball League Draft held Saturday. UCLA and Oklahoma tried for the second most selections with a total of three each. Each player selected will have an opportunity to play in the WPSL if signed to a contract at the conclusion of the 2001 NCAA season.

Lisa Carey was the first Sooner picked and the sixth overall. She was the 2000 Big 12 Player of the Year and a first-team All-American. Last season's campaign included a .411 batting average and 18 home runs. She lead the conference in hits (86), home runs, RBI (74), total bases (163) and slugging percentage (.780).

Ashli Barrett, a first-team All-American and three-time All Big 12, was picked seventh in the draft. She finished the 2000 season with a .358 batting average, 20 doubles, and 16 home runs. The 2000 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, Andrea Davis was the 14th overall pick in the draft. She helped lead her team to the National Championship after hitting .355 with 14 homeruns and 55 RBI's.

"It's a tribute to this tremendous senior class and they finally get the recognition that is due for winning the National Championship," said OU head coach Patty Gasso. "It is a great opportunity to continue their playing career and represent the University of Oklahoma."

The world's premier professional fastpitch softball league for women will celebrate its fifth anniversary when spring training begins in mid-May. The WPSL was created in 1997 to provide elite female athletes with the opportunity to compete professionally, while providing affordably-priced entertainment for families and sports fans around the globe.

The WPSL currently consists of four teams located in "National Training Centers" in Akron, Ohio, and Plant City, Fla. The league plans to expand to at least six teams nationwide in 2002. The Akron Racers, Florida Wahoos, Ohio Pride and Tampa Bay FireStix will play in a 40-game regular-season schedule that begins in June. ESPN2 will also include the WPSL in its summer schedule for the fifth-consecutive season. The sports television network will broadcast 10 games in 2001.
