NORMAN, Okla. -- - The University of Oklahoma softball team is ranked eighth in the preseason NFCA/USA Today top 25 softball poll released today. OU, which finished with a 40-16 record in 1999, is also picked to win the Big 12 Conference in the recently-released coaches' poll.
Defending national champion UCLA holds the top spot in the national poll, followed by Washington and Fresno State, each of which received one first-place vote. Arizona, Southern Mississippi, Michigan and LSU come in at four through seven. Arizona State and Louisiana-Lafayette round out the top 10.
Four Big 12 teams are listed in the poll. Nebraska, which was picked to finish second in the conference, appears at No.13. Texas is No. 19 and Missouri is No. 24.
Oklahoma is scheduled to play seven of the teams in the top 25 during the 2000 season and could meet several more in regular season tournament play.
The Sooners open their season Feb. 11-13 at the Texas-Arlington Classic. They make their home debut on Feb. 23 in a double-header with Arkansas at the OU Softball Complex.
