Teyon Ware enters his fourth year with the Sooners in 2025-26, having joined the program on October 3, 2022, when he was named an assistant coach under then-head coach Lou Rosselli.
During the 2024-25 season, Ware played a key role in the development of Oklahomaās middleweights, particularly Mosha Schwartz (141) and Willie McDougald (149), who qualified for their fourth and third NCAA Championships, respectively. The duo combined for a 37-16 record and recorded eight wins over ranked opponents.
In 2023-24, Ware was instrumental in the success of Stephen Buchanan, who earned All-American honors for the third time in his career. Buchanan posted a dominant 27-3 record and finished third at the NCAA Championships in the 197-pound bracketāOUās highest individual NCAA finish in eight seasons. Ware also helped the program achieve its best team finish at the NCAA Championships (23rd) in eight years.
A two-time national champion and four-time All-American for the Sooners, Ware has over a decade of coaching experience and is a proven developer of talent in multiple weight classes. Before returning to Norman, he spent eight years as an assistant coach at Wyoming.
In addition to leading 33 CowboyĀ grapplers to NCAA berths, he helped four wrestlers win Big 12 championships. Under Ware's guidance, Stephen Buchanan and Bryce Meredith earned All-America honors in 2022 and 2018, respectively.
Prior to his tenure at Wyoming, Ware spent three years at Binghamton, helping send eight Bearcats to the NCAA Championships. Before his time at Binghamton, he was a club coach for the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, Prodigy Wrestling Club and Oklahoma Underdog Wrestling Club.
A native of Edmond, Okla., Ware is considered one of OU's all-time greats after accumulatingĀ a 112-15 record for the Sooners under former head coach Jack Spates. He won two NCAA Individual championships at 141 pounds and earned a spot in the final three times. He won NCAA Championships during his freshman and junior seasons. In 2003, he was a Big XII conference champion and also earned Big XII Outstanding Wrestler award. In 2006, he was named to the Big XII 10th Anniversary Team.
Ware went 132-0 and won four state championships at Edmond North High School, winning the national Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award in 2002. HeĀ was also on the All-District Football Team and 2nd Team All-State Football. He was named Co-Offensive Player of the Year for the Metro Conference.
A member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Ware excelled on the international stage following his collegiate career at Oklahoma. He won a bronze medal at the 2011 Pan-American Games and wrestled for the United States at the 2011 World Championships.
