Matt Gordon
- Title:
- Special Assistant to the Head Coach and Director of Recruiting
Matt Gordon joined the University of Oklahoma men's basketball staff as special assistant to the head coach and director of recruiting in April 2021.
Gordon arrived in Norman after spending a decade on staff at Loyola University Chicago, the last seven seasons as an assistant coach under current OU head coach Porter Moser and the previous three as director of basketball of operations.
Over the last seven years with Gordon as an assistant coach, Loyola registered a 156-80 (.661) record, a mark that included 18 or more wins each of the last five seasons and a 56-16 (.778) conference record the last four campaigns. Loyola notched 12 wins over Power 6 foes with him on staff, including seven over the last four seasons alone.
In 2020-21, Loyola tallied 25 wins and captured its third Missouri Valley Conference championship in four seasons. The eighth-seeded Ramblers defeated Georgia Tech in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before knocking off No. 1 seed Illinois in the second round to advance to the Sweet 16. Led by third-team AP All-American and MVC Player of the Year Cameron Krutwig, they finished the year ranked No. 17 in the AP poll.
In 2019-20, Loyola rolled to a 21-win season and finished just one game out of first place in the MVC standings, marking the third straight year the Ramblers placed first or second in the league.
Gordon played an integral role in helping Loyola win consecutive regular season conference titles for the first time in program history in 2017-18 and 2018-19. It also marked the first time in 55 seasons the Ramblers made back-to-back postseason appearances. Guards Clayton Custer (2018) and Marques Towns (2019) were named MVC Players of the Year.
In 2018-19, Loyola collected its second straight 20-win campaign, winning a share of the MVC regular-season championship and receiving a bid to the NIT. In addition, Gordon helped Townes and Krutwig to first-team All-MVC honors, giving Loyola multiple first-team selections for the first time since 1987.
During Loyola's historic 2017-18 season, Gordon was instrumental in delivering the program's first trip to the NCAA Final Four in over 45 years. The team racked up a school-record 32 wins, claiming the MVC regular season and tournament titles.
In his first three years as an assistant on the Loyola staff, Gordon assisted in developing the Ramblers' guards during the program's transition from the Horizon League to the MVC, helping two of them to all-MVC honors.
Before arriving at Loyola, Gordon worked with Moser on Rick Majerus' Saint Louis staff as the director of basketball operations from 2008-11. Prior to that, Gordon served as a basketball operations intern with the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2007-08 season. He assisted the Grizzlies' coaching staff with multiple projects in the video department, including the recording and editing of all games.
A 2006 Illinois State graduate, Gordon began his basketball career as the head student manager for the Redbirds and worked three seasons there when Moser was the head coach. Gordon also served as ISU's video coordinator and as a camp counselor. After graduating from ISU, he took a position with Full Package Athletics in Lake Forest, Ill., serving as a head coach for AAU teams and conducting daily practices and workouts for those squads.
Gordon and his wife, Kate, reside in Norman.
