CHICAGO — With its head coach returning to his home city, the Oklahoma men's basketball team overcame a 12-point second-half deficit and gutted out a 75-74 win over Marquette in Chicago on Friday afternoon.
Guard
Nijel Pack nailed five of his seven 3-pont attempts and scored a game-high 24 points, and forward
Tae Davis added a season-high 19 points and game highs of 11 rebounds and five assists for the Sooners, who improved to 5-2 and won for the third straight time. Marquette dropped to 4-4 on the year.
After falling behind by 13 points (37-24) with 4:46 remaining in the first half, Oklahoma clamped down defensively and got 3-pointers from
Derrion Reid, Pack and
Jeff Nwankwo to cut its deficit to four at halftime, 37-33.
Marquette came out strong in the second half, pushing its advantage to as many as 12 points at 50-38 with 13:34 remaining. But the Sooners responded with a 19-4 burst over the next six minutes and took their first lead of the game, 57-54, on Nwankwo's third 3-pointer of the afternoon with 7:25 left.
OU extended its lead to 72-64 after a Pack 25-foot 3-pointer, a Davis layup and a
Jadon Jones triple from the left wing, only to see the Golden Eagles respond with eight straight points to knot the score at 72 apiece with 58 seconds left.
After a timeout, Pack found Reid for a corner 3 on the left side with 34 seconds to go that put the Sooners up by three. Marquette answered with two quick free throws and got the ball back following a turnover with 17 seconds remaining, but Davis forced the Golden Eagles into a fall-away 15-foot attempt at the buzzer that missed the mark and gave the Sooners the one-point victory.
The game, played at Credit Union 1 Arena as part of the Bad Boy Mowers Series, marked OU head coach
Porter Moser's return to Chicago, where he directed Loyola Chicago for 10 seasons, including to a Final Four appearance in 2018. Moser grew up in nearby Naperville, Ill.
"I thought both teams were fighting for their lives to get a win," said Moser, who improved to 50-9 in regular season non-conference games as OU's head coach. "There were gritty performances by both teams and we found a way to win and get a stop. It was just an elite defensive stop by
Tae Davis on that last possession."
Davis entered the game leading the SEC with his 4.2 offensive rebounds per game and upped that average with his six offensive caroms against the Golden Eagles. OU outscored Marquette 15-8 in second-chance points despite being outboarded 16-10 on the offensive glass.
Pack extended his streak of at least four 3-point makes to five games and is 25 for 43 (.581) from long distance over the stretch. He entered the contest leading the SEC and ranking third nationally with his 4.3 treys per outing.
Davis (8 for 9) and Pack (9 for 14), who were high school teammates in Indianapolis, combined to make 17 of 23 shots from the field Friday (.739). Davis's game-high five assists were one shy of his career most.
Reid drained six of his 10 field goal attempts (2 for 3 from behind the arc) and finished with 15 points, and Nwankwo scored a career-high 11 with the help of 3-for-5 3-point shooting. No other Sooner scored more than four points.
"I have always had so much respect for Marquette," said Moser. "Heck, I almost went there out of high school. I have always followed them ... and of course my time with (former Marquette head coach) Rick Majerus. I played them a lot, but this really wasn't about me. There were a lot of fun side narratives, but I am so happy because you need to taste close wins like this against a team that you think will be another tournament team. I was just happy for the guys that they found a way to win."
In the second half, OU shot .533 from the field and held Marquette to a .387 figure.
The Sooners registered eight blocked shots on the day, just two shy of their season high. Forward/center
Mohamed Wague tied a career high with three rejections.
The contest marked the third straight for OU with single-digit turnovers, a program first since the 2020-21 season. OU's 18 turnovers over the last three games are its fewest over a three-game stretch in at least 30 years.
OU is back in action Tuesday when it plays at Wake Forest at 6 p.m. CT. The ACC-SEC Challenge game will be televised by ACC Network.
