PHOENIX — Oklahoma scored the first four points against Arizona State, but it was uphill from there as the Sooners fell 86-70 Saturday night at Mortgage Matchup Center, home of the Phoenix Suns. The game was part of the Jerry Colangelo Classic.
The Sun Devils (7-2) outshot OU (6-3) 47% to 35% and nailed 13 of their 24 3-point attempts (54%) to snap the Sooners' four-game winning streak.
Forward
Tae Davis gave OU a 4-0 lead with a layup and two free throws in the first 90 seconds, but Arizona scored the next 18 points and 27 of the next 29 to go up 27-6 with 10:20 remaining in the first half.
The Sun Devils stretched their 19-point (47-28) halftime lead to as many 24 before OU started whittling away and closing the gap to 14 points on forward
Kuol Atak's third of four 3-pointers with 4:16 to go. But that's the closest the Sooners got.
Atak, who played a total of 2:23 over the past three games and didn't see the court in the first half against ASU, finished with a team-high 12 points on 4-for-8 3-point shooting in nine second-half minutes.
Atak was joined in double figures by Davis and guard
Xzayvier Brown (11 points each) and guard
Jeff Nwankwo (10). Brown handed out a team-high four assists and Nwankwo was 3 for 6 from 3-point range.
For the first time this season, OU guard
Nijel Pack was held to single digits in points. He finished with seven on 3-for-8 shooting and had his six-game streak of making at least three 3-pointers snapped (he was 1 for 5).
Guard
Jadon Jones tallied eight points, all in the first half, and a season-high six rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench, while center
Mohamed Wague led the Sooners with seven rebounds and three steals.
ASU guard Maurice Odom scored a game-high 17 points and registered five rebounds and six assists.
OU is off until facing Oklahoma State (9-0) on Saturday, Dec. 13, at noon CT at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. The Sooners, who won last year's December matchup in OKC, 80-65, hold a 144-106 all-time series lead against the Cowboys (250 games played).
