OKLAHOMA CITY — Guards
Xzayvier Brown and
Nijel Pack combined for 39 points and Oklahoma held Oklahoma State to 38.0% field goal shooting to register an 85-76 Bedlam win Saturday afternoon at Paycom Center. The victory was OU's fourth straight in the series.
After averaging 7.3 points on 7-for-30 field goal and 0-for-14 3-point shooting over the previous three games while battling a sprained ankle, Brown tied a season high with 21 points on just nine shots. He made six field goals, was 3 for 5 from long distance and drained all six of his free throw attempts, while also handing out a game-high-tying five assists against just one turnover.
Pack buried four 3-pointers on nine attempts and finished with 18 points and a season-high six rebounds. It was his seventh game with at least four treys this season.
The Sooners (7-3), who handed OSU its first loss of the season after a 9-0 start, led 41-35 at halftime and extended the margin to nine (46-37) two minutes into the second half. The Cowboys battled back to take a 53-51 lead with 11:32 remaining, but their advantage was short-lived as OU responded with a 21-10 run to go back up by nine (72-63) with 4:54 to go. Brown scored OU's last seven points of the spurt.
OSU didn't go away, and trimmed its deficit to 79-76 with 1:37 left, but
Tae Davis' two-handed dunk and four OU free throws sealed the game, as the Cowboys went scoreless the rest of the way.
The Sooners played one of their best defensive games of the season. OSU entered the contest ranked 14th nationally with its 91.3 points per game and hadn't scored fewer than 84 points in any outing. OU, which held the Cowboys to 31.0% shooting from behind the arc (9 for 29), posted a 46-36 rebounding advantage, good for its third-best margin of the season.
Starting forwards
Derrion Reid and
Tae Davis each made four baskets and combined for 19 points and 14 rebounds. Reid was 4 for 8 from the field and finished with 10 points and four boards. Davis, who was scoreless in the first half, ended with nine points, a game-high 10 rebounds and four assists.
Guard
Jadon Jones was again a spark off the bench, drilling three first-half 3-pointers and finishing with nine points, four boards, an assist and a steal in a season-high 27 minutes.
Center
Mohamed Wague contributed five points, five rebounds and a team-high three blocked shots, and in-state guard
Dayton Forsythe recorded four points (all free throws down the stretch), three caroms, two assists and a steal.
The game marked the 251st all-time meeting between the programs, with the Sooners now holding a 145-106 lead. OU also improved to 16-6 all-time at Paycom Center (formerly named Ford Center and Chesapeake Energy Arena).
OU has won 22 of its last 25 regular season non-conference games.
The Sooners are back at Lloyd Noble Center for the first time since Nov. 23 when they host Kansas City on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT to start a stretch of three consecutive home games to finish non-conference play. The contest will be televised by SEC Network.
