Red River Clash Closes Regular Season Saturday

March 06, 2026 | Men's Basketball

NORMAN — Looking for its sixth win in eight games, Oklahoma (16-14, 6-11 SEC) closes the regular season at Texas (18-12, 9-8) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CT at Moody Center in Austin.

Saturday's game will be televised by SEC Network with Lowell Galindo (play-by-play) and Pat Bradley (analyst) announcing. It will air on the Sooner Sports Radio Network (KRXO 107.7 FM in Oklahoma City; KTBZ 1430 AM in Tulsa; SiriusXM 383; Varsity Radio App) with Toby Rowland and Kevin Henry on the call.

Oklahoma has won five of its last seven games, picking up victories at No. 15 Vanderbilt, vs. Georgia, vs. Auburn, at LSU and vs. Missouri. In those five wins, OU led for 174:52 of 200 minutes and by double digits for a combined 91:33. Six Sooners averaged double figures in scoring and OU shot a combined 55% from the field and 51% (58 for 113) from 3-point range in the five triumphs.

The Sooners lead the SEC in league play with their 38.9% 3-point field goal mark and rank third with their 9.7 treys per outing. Over the last six games, they are shooting 47.6% (68 for 143) from behind the arc. OU has made at least 10 treys in each of the last four contests and at least eight in each of the last 11 games. On the season, it is averaging 10.0 treys per outing (the school record is 10.3 in 2015-16).

Texas, which was picked ninth in the preseason SEC media poll, is tied with Georgia for ninth place in league play. The Longhorns, who are 5-3 in SEC home games (beat Vanderbilt, Georgia, South Carolina, Ole Miss and LSU; lost to Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Florida), have won six of their last nine contests and are coming off a 105-85 loss at Arkansas on Wednesday. They are under the direction of first-year head coach Sean Miller, who owns a 505-208 record in 21 years overall.

Nijel Pack, a first-year Sooner who is in his sixth year overall, ranks first among active Division I players (and 24th all-time) with 412 career 3-point field goal makes and third with 2,221 points. He needs two 3-pointers to tie Davidson's Stephen Curry for the No. 21 all-time spot. Pack leads the SEC with his .454 3-point field goal percentage and 3.3 treys per game. Over the last six outings, he is a sizzling 23 for 39 (59%) from long distance.

SCENE SETTERS

• Conference cohorts for 28 years as members of the Big 12, Oklahoma and Texas officially joined the Southeastern Conference on July 1, 2024. Saturday's game will mark the fourth SEC meeting on the hardwood between the two men's hoops programs (they split two matchups last season and Texas prevailed on Jan. 31 this year; the visiting team won all three contests).

• Despite its 6-11 SEC record, Oklahoma has held a halftime lead in nine of the 17 games. It has also held a double-digit advantage in eight of the last 13 outings (five wins).

• During their current three-game winning streak, the Sooners have trailed for a combined 1 minute and 54 seconds out of 120 minutes (0:15 by Auburn, 1:08 by LSU and 0:31 by Missouri).

• Also during its three-game winning streak, OU is forcing opponents into 13.3 turnovers per game. Over its first 14 SEC outings, OU opponents averaged 9.1 turnovers per contest.

• Oklahoma has held each of its last four opponents to sub-50% field goal shooting after five of its previous six foes shot at least 50%.

• OU is the only Power Five team and one of just four out of 361 squads nationally to start the same lineup every game this season. Its starters have been guards Xzayvier Brown and Nijel Pack, forwards Tae Davis and Derrion Reid and center Mohamed Wague. Texas has started five different lineups.

• This marks the second straight season for Oklahoma to close the regular season at Texas. Last year on March 8, OU committed a season-low five turnovers and posted a 20-6 advantage in points off turnovers in a 76-72 win in Austin to snap an eight-game series losing streak. Six Sooners scored in double figures for the only time of the season. Guard Brycen Goodine led the way with 14 points, Jeremiah Fears added 13, Duke Miles 11 and Jalon Moore, Luke Northweather and Glenn Taylor Jr. 10 each. OU had six fewer offensive rebounds than Texas (13-7) but posted a 15-9 advantage in second-chance points. The Sooners held SEC Freshman of the Year Tre Johnson, who entered the game as the league's leading scorer at 20.6 points per contest, to seven points, all from the free throw line. Johnson was 0 for 14 from the field.

• Wague is coming off the most productive four-game stretch of his career, averaging 12.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocked shots and 1.5 steals while going 19 for 24 (79%) from the free throw line against Texas A&M, Auburn, LSU and Missouri. The fifth-year center recorded 12 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks against the Aggies, 18 points, nine boards and career highs of four blocks and four steals vs. Auburn, 10 points, nine caroms and three rejections at LSU and 11 points, seven boards and three assists vs. Missouri. He entered the four-game stretch averaging 6.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 0.5 steals while shooting 60% from the foul line.

• The resurgence of guard Dayton Forsythe has boosted OU the last few weeks. After a 10-game stretch in which he averaged 1.3 points and went 2 for 31 from the field (he battled sprains of both ankles), the sophomore is averaging 9.2 points over the last nine contests. Over the last seven games, he is averaging 10.1 points (four double-digit efforts).

• Long Beach State transfer Jadon Jones averaged 5.4 points over his first 19 outings, but over the last seven games is averaging 8.0 points. The sixth-year guard, who is 15 for 26 (58%) from 3-point range over those seven contests, has drawn 13 fouls while attempting a 3-pointer this season. The 2021-22 Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Year has 19 steals and 12 blocks over the past 13 games.

SERIES HISTORY

• Saturday's game will mark the 109th meeting between OU and Texas, with the Sooners holding a 58-50 series lead. The Longhorns hold a 26-21 advantage in Austin.

• OU has beaten Texas in Austin eight times since the turn of the century (2001, 2002, 2005, 2014, 2015, 2020, 2021 and 2025).

• Oklahoma held a 42-16 (.724) series lead through the 2001-02 season. Since then, Texas holds a 34-16 (.680) head-to-head advantage. The Longhorns have won nine of the last 10 matchups, five of them by four or fewer points.

EARLIER THIS YEAR VS. TEXAS

• Oklahoma jumped out to a 23-9 lead on Jan. 31 but was outscored 70-46 the rest of the way, including 24-8 over the final 7:51, in a 79-69 loss to Texas in Norman. OU held the lead for 30:22.

• The Sooners started hot, making six of their first eight field goal attempts and holding the Longhorns to just three makes on their first 14 shots. But Texas flipped the script and went 27 for 35 (77%) over the final 30 minutes to hand OU its eighth consecutive defeat. For the game, UT shot an opponent-season-high 61% from the floor and was 22 for 28 (79%) from two-point range. Nijel Pack scored a game-high 23 points on 9-for-22 shooting (3 for 8 from behind the arc), while Xzayvier Brown and Derrion Reid each contributed 15 points. Kirill Elatontsev finished with nine points — his second most this season — to go along with four boards, a career-high three assists and two steals.

• Texas took its first lead of the day at 41-40 with 15:49 remaining, but OU went back up 61-55 with 8:38 to go, only to see Texas score seven straight. Brown's follow shot with 5:56 to go put the Sooners back in front 63-62, but it was their last lead of the game as the Longhorns posted a 17-6 advantage over the last 5:32.

PACK MENTALITY

• First-year Oklahoma guard Nijel Pack surpassed the 2,000-point mark Jan. 11 at Texas A&M and has 2,221 for his career to rank third nationally among active players.

• Pack leads active Division I players and ranks 23rd all-time with 412 career 3-point field goals. The only player to ever wear an OU uniform who has made more career treys is Umoja Gibson (428; was a Sooner during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons).

• Pack leads the SEC with his .454 season 3-point field goal percentage and 3.3 treys per game. Nationally, he ranks fifth and 17th, respectively.

• Pack has scored 20-plus points in six of the last 11 games (25 at Missouri, 22 vs. Arkansas, 23 vs. Texas, 20 at Tennessee, 22 vs. Auburn and 21 at LSU).

• Pack has made at least one 3-pointer in 28 of 30 games, at least three in 19 contests and at least five in nine outings. He buried at least three treys in six consecutive games between Nov. 11 and Dec. 2, the first Sooner to accomplish the feat since consensus national player of the year Buddy Hield during OU's 2015-16 Final Four campaign.

• A sixth-year collegian, Pack spent his first two seasons at Kansas State (he was a first-team All-Big 12 pick as a sophomore when he averaged 17.4 points, made 95 3-pointers and shot a league-high .436 from behind the arc) and the last three at Miami, Fla. (he helped the Hurricanes to their first Final Four his junior season and was named the Midwest Region Most Outstanding Player). He has started 151 of his 152 career games.

OU's 'X' FACTOR

• After scoring at least 13 points 14 times in a 15-game stretch (he averaged 18.7 points in the 15), junior guard Xzayvier Brown has been held to an average of 11.0 points over the last seven games.

• Brown has a team-high-tying seven outings of at least 20 points in SEC play (23 in a win over Ole Miss, a season-high 24 against No. 19 Florida, 21 vs. No. 18 Alabama, 22 at South Carolina, 21 at Kentucky, 20 in a victory at No. 15 Vanderbilt and 20 in a win at LSU).

• Brown ranks second in the SEC by shooting 89% from the free throw line (87 for 98) but only has 19 attempts over the last 10 games. For comparison, he attempted 45 free throws over the previous 10 contests. He assembled a streak of 27 makes, which ended Jan. 13 vs. Florida.

• After scoring at least 20 points in 14 of 35 games last year at Saint Joseph's, Brown has a team-high 12 games of 20-plus in 30 outings this season. He has 32 career games of at least 20.
