NORMAN — Ahead by two after a Nijel Pack 3-pointer with 1:25 remaining, Oklahoma gave up six points over the final minute and lost an 83-79 contest to No. 15 Arkansas at Lloyd Noble Center on Tuesday night.
The defeat for the Sooners (11-10, 1-7 SEC) was their seventh straight, while the Razorbacks (16-5, 6-2) won their third consecutive game.
Pack, who tied a season high with six 3-pointers on 11 attempts, drilled a 28-footer from straight away with 1:25 to go to put OU ahead 79-77. But those were the Sooners' final points, as Arkansas got a free throw from Darius Acuff Jr. with 1:01 to go and a basket and free throw from the freshman with 21 seconds left for an 81-79 lead. OU guard Xzayvier Brown attempted a game-tying shot seconds later, but his point-blank look was blocked by Trevon Brazile. After a defensive rebound, the Sooners quickly fouled Meleek Thomas, who hit both ends of a one-and-one to seal the victory.
The Razorbacks shot 56% from the field, the best OU opponent mark since the Nebraska game on Nov. 15. Arkansas was just 2 for 17 (12%) from 3-point range but went 33 for 46% (72%) from inside the arc. It also committed just six turnovers to the Sooners' 12 and posted a 15-8 scoring advantage off turnovers.
Pack led four Sooners in double figures with his game-high 22 points. After a two-game 2-for-17 stretch from behind the arc against Alabama and South Carolina, he has made 11 treys on 19 attempts (58%) over the last two contests.
Tae Davis finished with 14 points, three rebounds and two assists, Xzayvier Brown totaled 13 points, six boards and three assists, and Derrion Reid posted 12 points and six rebounds for the Sooners.
OU's other starter, Mohamed Wague, turned in his most productive outing in three weeks. The center finished with nine points, a game-high 12 rebounds (six offensive) and a team-high four assists. The four handouts also matched his career high.
Acuff Jr. registered 21 points and game-high nine assists for Arkansas without committing a turnover in his 36 minutes. Thomas, also a freshman, added 16 points and four boards.
The first half belonged largely to the Sooners, as they scored their most points in an opening period in league play in building a 48-44 halftime lead. Arkansas outshot OU 61% to 53% from the field in the first 20 minutes, but the Sooners attempted seven more shots thanks in part to an 8-3 offensive rebounding edge.
Pack led the first-half charge with 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting, including 4 of 6 from behind the arc. Reid added 10, all in the first 8:15.
The Sooners used a 14-2 run to take a 38-25 lead with 7:22 remaining before Arkansas responded with seven straight points. Consecutive Pack treys pushed OU's advantage back to 12 with 4:21 to go, but the Razorbacks answered again with an 8-0 spurt.
Oklahoma outrebounded Arkansas 34-31 on the night but shot just 36% in the second half while the Razorbacks posted a 50% figure.
OU is back home Saturday when it hosts Texas (12-8, 3-4 SEC) at 1 p.m. CT. The contest will be televised by ESPN2.
