TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oklahoma wrestling team wrapped up its regular season with a dominating performance on Sunday afternoon, defeating Arizona State, 32-6, inside Mullett Arena.
Sunday marked the 47th career meeting between the programs, but it was the first ever matchup as Big 12 Conference foes as the Sun Devils became an official league member on Aug. 2, 2024.
The Sooners (8-4 overall, 4-4 Big 12) took the lead after the second bout of the afternoon and never looked back, notching their 30th win all-time over the Sun Devils (4-9 overall, 1-6 Big 12). Five of OU's eight wins came with bonus points.
Starting at 125 pounds, No. 28 Lorenzo (13-7) was the first to take the mat for the Sooners against ASU's No. 2 Richard Figueroa. A tightly contested bout for three periods, Figueora gave the Sun Devils their only lead of the day with a 5-2 win. Lorenzo came close to landing a few shots in the final frame to extend the match, but the ASU lightweight and defending national champion held on for the win.
Arizona State would forfeit at 133 pounds, rewarding OU with six points in the team race.
Mosha Schwartz (141) became the first Sooner to get his hand raised. The red-hot senior from Franktown, Colo., who climbed three spots to No.15 in the latest NCAA Coaches' Rankings released earlier this week after knocking off consecutive top-15 opponents, scored a late third period takedown to hold on for a 5-4 decision win over Emilio Ysaguirre. Schwartz prevented Ysaguirre from playing spoiler in back-to-back nights as the Sun Devil 141-pounder upset Cornell's No. 30 Josh Saunders on Saturday night.
At 149, No. 17 Willie McDougald gave the Sooners a 12-3 lead with his team-leading 16th win of the season against Pierson Manville (SV-1 4-1). The senior is 4-0 on the year when wrestling past regulation.
Earning his first career dual win, freshman Landyn Sommer (157) put together his best performance in a Sooner singlet. The former top-150 prospect out of Stillwater, Okla., racked up three takedowns and a pair of escape points to take an 11-5 decision over Michael Kilic.
No. 31 Tate Picklo looked to snap a three-dual losing streak at 165 when he faced off with Austin Scott. The Mustang, Okla., native would come out firing, scoring two takedowns in the first period, followed by two more in both the second and third period en route to a 19-4 tech fall (6:08). It was Picklo's ninth bonus point win of the season and sixth dual win of the year.
Adding three straight major decision wins for the Sooners at 174, 184 and 197, No. 15 Gaven Sax (MD 18-9), No. 19 DJ Parker (MD 14-3) and Eli Cordy (MD 15-2) secured the dual victory for OU. Joining Sommer, Cordy became the second Sooner on the day to earn his first career dual win.
In the heavyweight bout, No. 25 Juan Mora dropped his match in tiebreakers to No. 5 Cohlton Schultz, TB-1 5-2.
The Sooners will now prepare for the Big 12 championships, set to be held at the BOK Center in Tulsa on March 8-9. Tickets for the championships can be purchased online, and Sooner fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in section 119, which is the official OU section at the competition.
