Women's Basketball Lands Three on Wooden Award Watch List

November 18, 2025 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – Three Oklahoma women's basketball standouts were named to the 2025–26 John R. Wooden Award Top 50 Watch List, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Tuesday.

Seniors Raegan Beers and Payton Verhulst, along with freshman Aaliyah Chavez, earned spots on the prestigious list, making OU one of just six programs nationally with at least three selections.

Beers, a preseason consensus All-America honoree, appears on the Wooden Watch List for the second straight season. The senior is averaging 16.8 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists on 60.8% shooting this year after being a midseason selection last season and appearing on every major national player-of-the-year preseason watch list in 2025-26.

Chavez, the No. 1 recruit in the 2025 class, has wasted no time making an impact, leading all Power Four freshmen with 18.4 points per game. The Lubbock, Texas, product, who was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, also fills the stat sheet with 4.4 rebounds while pacing the Sooners in assists (4.0) and steals (1.6).

Verhulst, an All-SEC performer a season ago, continues to deliver as one of the country's most complete guards, averaging 11.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game. She's shooting 44% from the floor and 36% from deep, already posting three double-figure scoring efforts.

Selected by a preseason panel of national college basketball experts, the Wooden Award Watch List identifies 50 student-athletes considered early frontrunners for the Wooden Award All-American Team™ and Wooden Award® Most Outstanding Player.

The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2026 John R. Wooden Award® Women's Player of the Year. Players not selected for the list remain eligible for inclusion on the Wooden Award® midseason, late-season list, and the National Ballot. The National Ballot will feature 15 top players who have demonstrated to their universities that they meet or exceed the Wooden Award® qualifications.

Oklahoma has never had a Wooden Award winner, but program legend Courtney Paris was a finalist in all four seasons of her career (2006–09).
