OU Defense Stars as Sooners Win at Western Carolina

November 16, 2025 | Women's Basketball

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) Raegan Beers had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 6 Oklahoma to a dominant 95-32 victory over Western Carolina on Sunday.

Oklahoma (4-1) also got a boost from Aaliyah Chavez, who tallied 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Zya Vann chipped in 14 points and Brooklyn Stewart added 10 for the Sooners.

Taj Hunter steered Western Carolina (2-2) with 12 points while Ally Hollifield scored 10.

Oklahoma led wire-to-wire and used a 31-9 run to reach a comfortable double-digit advantage midway through the second quarter. Chavez powered the Sooners during the scoring surge, with 12 points and four assists across a 13-minute stretch.

The Sooners outscored the Catamounts 28-10 in the third quarter and went on to lead by as much as 64 points.

Oklahoma scored 33 points off 26 Western Carolina turnovers. The Sooners also won the rebounding battle 54-22.

The Sooners have now won three consecutive games since falling to No. 3 UCLA last Monday. Chavez seems to be finding more comfort in running Oklahoma's offense as the true freshman guard from Lubbock, Texas, has played well in each of the victories, averaging 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and four assists over this three-contest stretch.

Western Carolina has yet to defeat an NCAA Division I opponent so far this season. Oklahoma is the highest-ranked team — men or women — to ever visit the Ramsey Center in Cullowhee. The Catamounts haven't beaten a major conference opponent at home since 2001.

The Sooners now head back to Norman where they'll host East Texas A&M on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. on SEC Network+.

POSTGAME NOTES

• No. 6 Oklahoma won its third straight game on Sunday, defeating Western Carolina, 95-32, at the Ramsey Center in Cullowhee, N.C. The win marked the end of a six-day stretch that Oklahoma played four games in, going 3-1 in such contests, with the only loss coming to No. 3 UCLA in Sacramento on Monday night.

• Oklahoma limited Western Carolina to just 32 points, tied for the second-fewest by an opponent in program history (25 vs. NC Central on 1/4/09) and the lowest allowed under fifth-year head coach Jennie Baranczyk. The previous opponent low in the Baranczyk era was 44 points (Southern on 11/4/24).

• Oklahoma held Western Carolina to just 21.3% shooting (10 of 47), the program's lowest opponent field-goal percentage since 2014 and tied for the seventh-lowest in school history. The 10 made field goals allowed are also tied for the second-fewest in the OU record book (8 vs. Tulsa in 1985).

• Aiding in the defensive effort, OU used 16 steals (fourth most since 2021) to force 26 turnovers that resulted in 33 OU points. The Catamounts finished with just three assists, 10 made field goals and 26 turnovers.

• OU's 63-point win marked the third-largest of the Baranczyk era, trailing only a 66-point win vs. Western Carolina last season in Norman when OU scored a program record 122 points and a 110-46 win (64 pts) over Alabama State in 2024.

Raegan Beers notched her SEC-leading 48th career double-double and third in five games this season, finishing with 21 points (7 of 10 FG) and 10 rebounds. The center now has 33 20-point games in her career and three in 2025

• For the second consecutive game, 10 of Oklahoma's 11 players scored as the Sooners scored a season-high 90 points. True freshman Daffa Cissoko tallied her first career points, making a pair of free throws in the final minute of the game.

Aaliyah Chavez poured in 19 points, her fifth straight double-digit outing to begin her college career, while adding six rebounds and team highs in assists (5) and steals (3). She is one of only two SEC freshmen with eight steals this season. Her 18.4 points per game lead Oklahoma and all Power Four freshmen, and her 15 made 3-pointers rank third nationally among first-year players. With her latest double-figure performance, she became the first OU freshman since Aaryn Ellenberg to open a career with five straight games of 10-plus points (Ellenberg's streak reached nine).

Zya Vann finished with a season-high 14 points and six rebounds as the sophomore, who moved into a starting role this season, now has three games in double figures.

• Oklahoma heads back to Norman where it hosts East Texas A&M on Wednesday night at Lloyd Noble Center. Tip is set for 6 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
