SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — In the 101st Division I men's basketball game at the Sanford Pentagon, 99 points were not enough for the Oklahoma Sooners (2-2) who were clipped in a 105-99 shootout against Nebraska (3-0) Saturday, Nov. 15.
Oklahoma drained 14 3-pointers and held as large as a 16-point lead, but Nebraska shot 64.3 percent from deep to rally for the win.
The Sooners held the advantage for 26:59 and both teams traded 11-point runs respectively.
OU's 99 points are the most for the Sooners in a defeat since putting up 106 in a three-point loss against Kansas in 2016.
The Sooners started the game with a 10-0 run and never trailed in the first half. A 19-6 spurt gave OU a game-high 44-28 advantage with 6:07 in the first session. Nebraska closed the gap at the break, trailing 51-44.
Nijel Pack hit one of his six 3-pointers, giving OU a 63-53 lead with 14:37. The Cornhuskers answered with an 11-0 run to take a lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
An explosive second half put Nebraska up double-digits, but the Sooners clawed back to get within five before coming up short.
Oklahoma had six players score in double figures for the first time since a 76-72 win at Texas in March of last season. Pack paced OU with 27, while
Xzayvier Brown notched 20.
Pack, Brown and
Derrion Reid dished out four assists apiece and
Tae Davis registered seven boards and 11 points.
The Sooners' 14 3-pointers matched their most since a win against Lindenwood Nov. 4 of last year. Prior to that game the last time OU reached 14 treys was Dec. 3, 2020 against UTSA.
It was the 189th all-time meeting between the former Big 12 rivals and the first meeting since Oklahoma defeated Nebraska, 69-56, in 2022 at the ESPN Events Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
Pack's 27-point game was his most since tallying 28 on seven triples against Kansas State Nov. 19, 2023 as a member of the Miami Hurricanes. Brown reached 20 points for the second time this year while
Dayton Forsythe and
Kuol Atak added 10 points each off the bench.
OU shot 19-for-21 from the free throw line, but Nebraska added 22 on 28 attempts.
The Cornhuskers were lifted by 28 points from Pryce Sandford and 26 from Rienk Mast, extending Nebraska's winning streak to a nation-best eight games.
Oklahoma returns to the Lloyd Noble Center Thursday, Nov. 20 to host Oral Roberts. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on SEC Network+.
