Goodine Scores 34 in Narrow Loss to No. 10 Aggies

January 08, 2025 | Men's Basketball

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Zhuric Phelps scored a career-high 34 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining, and No. 10 Texas A&M rallied from 18 down in the second half to defeat No. 17 Oklahoma 80-78 on Wednesday night.

The Aggies (13-2, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) won their ninth straight while leading scorer Wade Taylor IV sat out with an undisclosed injury.

Oklahoma reserve Brycen Goodine had a season-best 34 points in 27 minutes. Jeremiah Fears scored 13 and Jalon Moore added 11 for the Sooners (13-2, 0-2), who have lost two in a row after a 13-0 start.

Goodine, a transfer from Fairfield who hadn't scored more than 12 points in an entire game during his first season at Oklahoma, scored 21 and made six 3-pointers in the first half to help the Sooners take a 39-30 lead at the break.

Moore's 3-pointer gave Oklahoma a 51-33 lead, and Texas A&M called a timeout to try to slow the surge. It worked — the Aggies scored the next eight points, and the Sooners suddenly were the ones calling a timeout.

Phelps' fast-break layup cut Oklahoma's lead to 70-69. Solomon Washington's thunderous two-handed jam with five minutes remaining finally gave the Aggies the lead, and the game remained close from there.

Key moment

Oklahoma's Duke Miles missed a shot with 2 seconds remaining that would have tied the score, and the Sooners fouled on the rebound.

Key stat

The Aggies scored 30 points off Oklahoma's 18 turnovers.

Postgame Notes

• Sixth-year guard Brycen Goodine scored a season-high 34 points off the bench, the most points by a Sooner since Trae Young scored 44 vs. Baylor on Jan. 30, 2018. Goodine's previous season high was 12 points against Alcorn State on Dec. 7.

• Goodine, whose career high is 40 points (last season vs. Siena as a member of Fairfield's team), scored his first 20 points tonight in a span of 6:06, helping the Sooners make a 25-10 run from the 15:11 mark of the first half to the 9:05 mark (from down 6-5 to up 30-16).

• Goodine's first 11 points came in a span of 1:55 and his first 17 came in a span of 4:07.

• Goodine's nine 3-pointers were the most by a Sooner since Young made 10 against TCU on Jan. 13, 2018. The only other player to make nine or more treys in a game since at least 1996-97 was Hollis Price (nine vs. Iowa State on Jan. 2003). The school record is 11 by Brent Price against Loyola Marymount on Dec. 15, 1990.

• Oklahoma's 14 3-pointers tied for its most in a game since it made 17 vs. UTSA on Dec. 3, 2020. The Sooners also made 14 in this year's opener vs. Lindenwood. They shot a season-best .583 from behind the arc tonight.

• OU's .543 field goal performance was its third best of the season.

• Freshman guard Jeremiah Fears scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half. He has scored in double figures in all 15 games this season, the first OU freshman since Young in 2017-18 to score at least 10 points in each of his first 15 outings.
