Sooners Drop Road Contest at Georgia

January 11, 2025 | Men's Basketball

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Dakota Leffew and Asa Newell each scored 15 points and Georgia held off No. 17 Oklahoma 72-62 on Saturday night for its second consecutive win over a Top 25 team.

Georgia (14-2, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) made its bid to enter the Top 25 by beating No. 6 Kentucky 82-69 on Tuesday night and then giving the Sooners (13-3, 0-3) their third consecutive loss.

Oklahoma is still looking for its first SEC win in its debut season in the league. Jalon Moore led the Sooners with 17 points. Duke Miles and Kobe Elvis each had 14.

Brycen Goodine, who scored 34 points in Oklahoma's 80-78 loss to No. 10 Texas A&M on Wednesday night, scored only 3 points while making 1 of 7 shots from the field.

Following the winter weather postponement of Saturday's Atlanta-Houston NBA game in Atlanta, Hawks guard Trae Young, who played one season at Oklahoma, attended the game. Young wore a crimson Sooners shirt.

Postgame Notes

• Oklahoma (13-3, 0-3 SEC) shot season lows of .381 from the field and .259 (7 for 27) from 3-point range in a 72-62 loss at Georgia (14-2, 2-1) on Saturday night.

• The game marked just the second between OU and Georgia, with the Sooners posting an 83-80 win in the Chaminade Christmas Classic on Dec. 25, 1987, in Honolulu, Hawai'i.

• Georgia's eight blocked shots tonight tied an OU opponent season high (Northwestern State had eight on Nov. 11).

• OU entered the game as the SEC's top free throw shooting team at .810 but only attempted nine free throws tonight (made seven). Georgia, meanwhile, was 27 of 37 at the line. The Bulldogs' 27 makes and 37 attempts were by far OU opponent season highs (Michigan and Alabama made 22, while Alabama attempted 30).

• Senior forward Jalon Moore led OU in scoring for the seventh time this season, finishing with 17 points. He also registered a team-high nine rebounds, the fifth time this year he paced the squad in boards. Moore went 2 for 4 from 3-point range, marking the fourth straight game he shot at least 50% from behind the arc and fifth time in six games. He is shooting .449 from deep on the season.

• After not scoring against Texas A&M on Wednesday, super senior guard Kobe Elvis netted 14 points against the Bulldogs and tied for the team lead with five assists.

• Redshirt senior guard Duke Miles scored 14 points for his sixth double-digit effort in the last seven contests. He made both of his free throw attempts and over the last seven games is 24 for 25 at the line (.960).

• Senior forward/center Mohamed Wague scored in double figures for just the second time this season, tallying 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting. Wague, who had 12 points against Alcorn State on Dec. 7, is shooting .791 from the field on the year (19 for 24).

• Tonight's game marked the first in the career of freshman guard Jeremiah Fears in which he didn't score in double figures (he finished with two points), snapping a streak of 15 performances of 10 or more points. It was the longest streak by an OU freshman to start a career since Trae Young in 2017-18 (double-digit points in all 32 games). Young was in attendance tonight.

• Oklahoma entered the week 9-0 this season when leading at the half but lost Wednesday and tonight after being up at intermission (led 39-30 against Texas A&M and 36-33 tonight).

• OU outscored 14 of its first 15 opponents in fastbreak points. Tonight, both teams had 14 fastbreak points.
