Sooners Drop Heartbreaker to No. 1/1 Houston

NORMAN – No. 1/1 Houston's Jamal Shead hit a jumper with less than one second left in regulation, and RV/RV Oklahoma fell to the Cougars 87-85 on Saturday night at Lloyd Noble Center.
Despite being down 74-63 with 9:15 remaining, Oklahoma rallied and tied the score at 85-all with 11 seconds left.
The Sooners' (19-10, 7-9 Big 12) comeback attempt started with a jumper by senior Sam Godwin and continued with a 3-pointer by senior Le'Tre Darthard. UH's LJ Cryer answered, extending the Houston lead back to eight before junior Jalon Moore bound through the lane and buried a tough layup at the rim.
Senior Rivaldo Soares cut the deficit to five after a made free throw before Mylik Wilson scored on Houston's (26-3, 13-3 Big 12) next trip down the floor.
Darthard buried his fifth 3-pointer of the night with 4:42 left, sending the Lloyd Noble Center crowd into a frenzy. Houston quickly silenced the crowd with a basket by Emanuel Sharp.
Junior Javian McCollum buried two free throws with 3:56 remaining, breaking the Oklahoma program record for consecutive free throws made. McCollum eclipsed Nate Carters' 37 straight set in 2007.
Houston's J'Wan Roberts put the Cougars up six with a layup before the Sooners recorded back-to-back baskets by Moore and Godwin, cutting the deficit to two.
Sharp again silenced the capacity crowd at LNC with a 3-pointer, extending UH's lead back to five.
Down 85-80 with 1:29 left, Oklahoma scored five points on a layup by sophomore Milos Uzan, a made free throw by Godwin and a layup by McCollum.
The Sooners forced a missed shot on Houston's next trip down the court before Shead grabbed the loose ball and put in the game-winner.
Five Sooners finished in double figures after zero reached the double-digit plateau against Iowa State. Godwin recorded a team-high 17 points on 6-for-6 shooting and added seven rebounds. Moore tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds, recording his third double-double in the Crimson and Cream. Darthard finished 5 for 7 from deep and added 15 points.
In his second start at Oklahoma, Soares finished with 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting. McCollum dished out a team-high eight assists and added 12 points and two rebounds.
