NORMAN – In front of a record crowd of 3,325 fans, the Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a three-set match to No. 14 Texas, 25-14, 25-15, 25-19, Friday night inside McCasland Field House.
Alexis Shelton led all Sooners with 14 kills on the night, her 27th-straight match in double digit figures. On the night, she hit a team-best .324. The junior was also just two digs shy of a double-double, recording eight on the night.
Kamille Gibson and
Kari Geissberger each chipped in seven kills, while
Lydia Martyn added five. Martyn now needs just 12 kills to reach 1,000 in her career.
Whitney Wallace notched 10 digs on the night to lead the team, while
Payton Chamberlain added 24 assists.
The Longhorns hit .467 in the opening frame en route to a 25-14 win. Texas jumped out to a 6-2 lead early and the Sooners couldn't overcome the deficit.
OU led early in the second set, before the Longhorns tied things at 10-10. Texas took a lead at the media timeout, 15-12, and finished the set on a 10-3 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the final frame, the Sooners used a 5-0 run to pull within four at 19-15. A crucial challenge won by the Sooners sparked a comeback that ultimately fell short as Texas took the set 25-19.
The Sooners will be back in action on Sunday to celebrate Senior Day when they take on Auburn at 5 p.m. CT inside McCasland Field House.
