NORMAN – The reigning three-time national champion Oklahoma softball team will enter the season as the unanimous No. 1 in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 for the third consecutive campaign. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced the preseason poll Tuesday.
Oklahoma's No. 1 spot in the NFCA poll marks the fifth time the Sooners enter a season in the top spot (2017, '18, '22, '23, '24) and the fourth time OU has been the unanimous choice in the coaches poll, joining the 2017, 2022 and 2023 squads.
OU received 800 total points and all 32 first-place votes to lead No. 2 Tennessee (731 points). Florida State (729) and Stanford (729) share the No. 3 ranking while No. 5 Clemson (579) rounds out the top five.

Additionally, it's the 13th straight year the Sooners have started in the NFCA's top 10, good for the nation's longest active streak. OU has been ranked in the top five 11 of the past 12 years, the most over that stretch.
Overall, the Sooners are now alone in second with 24 top-10 appearances in the NFCA preseason poll, trailing only UCLA's 25.
Oklahoma, UCLA and Washington are the only programs to be ranked in every NFCA preseason poll, which dates back to 1995. OU also extended its streak of being the only program ranked every week in the 29-year existence of the NFCA's poll, 422 straight polls.
The Sooners, also the preseason unanimous No. 1 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Preseason Top 25, were recently selected as the Big 12 preseason favorite, marking the 12th consecutive year and 15th in the last 16 seasons that OU has topped the league's preseason poll.
Seven starting position players return to Oklahoma in 2024 including All-Americans
Jayda Coleman,
Kinzie Hansen and
Tiare Jennings. The Sooners enjoyed an incredible 2023 campaign that saw the team finish 61-1, establish a new NCAA Division I record for winning percentage (.984), capture Big 12 regular season and tournament titles while earning the program's third consecutive national championship.
Coleman, Hansen, Jennings,
Nicole May,
Kelly Maxwell and
Alyssa Brito were each named Preseason All-Americans by Softball America on Monday.
OU opens the 2024 season Feb. 8 at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Over the course of the regular season, the Sooners will play 16 schools that reached the 2023 NCAA Tournament including six Super Regional participants and two Women's College World Series qualifiers. Fifteen of Oklahoma's contests are against opponents that were ranked in both final 2023 national polls with an additional seven games featuring opponents who received votes in both final polls.
