LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma controlled the match for the first 45 minutes, but a pair of second-half goals from No. 14 Texas Tech was the difference Thursday night as the Sooners fell 2-0 to the Red Raiders on the road.
The loss was Oklahoma's (6-5-1, 2-1-1) first in Big 12 play as the undefeated, league-leading Red Raiders scored two goals in 30 seconds to down OU.
Powered by the momentum of back-to-back wins, the Sooners threatened early, notching a pair of corners in the first handful of minutes. The Sooners' best chance of the first half came when
Alexis Washington dispossessed her mark near midfield and dashed past the Texas Tech backline, firing a shot that ricocheted off the post in the 21st minute. OU outshot Texas Tech (10-0-2, 4-0-0) 4-3 in the opening half and held a 3-0 advantage from the corner spot, but the Sooners couldn't get on the board.
The Red Raiders came out the more aggressive team in the second half, pouring into the attacking third. The breakthrough finally came in the 52nd minute when Macy Blackburn, the Big 12 leader in assists, found Hannah Cooper on a corner as Cooper headed it past OU goalkeeper
Sierra Giorgio to make it 1-0. Just 30 seconds later, in the 53rd minute,
Cailey England fouled a Red Raider attacker in the box, and Blackburn converted the penalty kick to give TTU a 2-0 advantage.
The Sooners were outshot, 8-6, for just the third time this season, while OU maintained a 7-1 edge in corners.
Ella Pappas, who got her first start of the season, led the OU charge with three twos (2 SOG) in the effort.
The Sooners will look to rebound on Sunday when they host No. 19 UCF (7-3-0, 3-1-0 Big 12), who fell 2-1 to Oklahoma State on Thursday in Stillwater, at John Crain Field in Norman at 1 p.m. CT. OU will put its six-game unbeaten streak at home on the line vs. the Knights.
