Sooners Suffer First Loss of Season at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Oklahoma soccer team suffered its first defeat of the 2023 season Sunday afternoon at Samford, falling 4-0 to the Bulldogs in Birmingham.

The Sooners (3-1-0) registered nine shots in the match, but couldn't find the back of the net for the first time this season after scoring a combined 18 goals in the first three games.

Samford (2-1-1) capitalized on a quick start with three first half goals. In the sixth minute, the Bulldogs found the back of the net on a goal inside the six-yard box, before doubling their lead in the 13th minute after a Sooners counterattack with shots from redshirt senior Emma Hawkins and junior Leonie Weber fell short.

In the 41st minute, Samford successfully executed a set piece that resulted in a goal from inside the six-yard box. Following an initial blocked shot, the ball found a Samford player who was able to find the back of the net with her left foot.

Following a lightning delay at the start of the second half, the teams battled in the second 45 with the only tally being a Samford goal in the 82nd minute. After the Sooner goalkeeper got off her line, the Bulldogs were able to capitalize with a goal from long distance to bring the final tally to 4-0.

Weber (4) and Hawkins (2) paced the Sooners in shots. In goal, sophomore Olivia Ramey and redshirt sophomore Sierra Giorgio both saw action, with Giorgio registering three saves.

Oklahoma looks to bounce back as the team continues its road swing with a pair of matches in Spokane, Wash., next week. Thursday, OU faces Gonzaga at 9 p.m. CT on the Zags' home turf, before a neutral site match Sunday, Sept. 3 vs. Montana at 1 p.m. CT.
