Sooners Add Transfer Shcherbinina For 2023-24

June 02, 2023 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN - Oklahoma women's tennis head coach Audra Cohen announced the addition of transfer Alina Shcherbinina on Friday.

"Alina has proven she has a remarkably high tennis level as she's been successful in the No. 1 spot in the Big 12," said Cohen. "What excites us more than Alina's proven high level, is her room for continue development. She has the talent, athleticism and work ethic it takes to achieve excellence."

From Moscow, Russia, Shcherbinina joins the Sooners in August 2023 after two seasons at Baylor. In the 2022-23 season, she tallied a 20-8 singles record, primarily at the No. 1 spot, and 20-12 doubles record. She was also named to the 2023 All-Big 12 First Team in singles after going 6-3 in Big 12 action and collecting a team-high three wins over ranked opponents.

In her first collegiate season, Shcherbinina led the Bears in singles wins with 25 on the year and was a member of the Big 12 All-Freshman Team, All-Big 12 Second Team in singles and was the No. 4 position champion in singles.

In her career before college, she reached a career-best ITF junior ranking at No. 29 and appeared in three junior Grand Slams in 2021. Additionally, she won four ITF junior tournaments in singles and six ITF junior tournaments in doubles.

Shcherbinina also ranked No. 5 in tennis among juniors, No. 3 in singles with a No. 1 ranking in junior doubles in Russia and won both the singles and doubles championships in the U18 Moscow Cup.

"I am excited to join Sooner Nation and grow together with the team," said Shcherbinina.

OU will return to the court in the fall with a schedule announced at a later date.
